Been thinking about the songs of my youth, and the not-so-subtle sexism and acceptance of violence towards women. Do you remember "Tom Dooley"?
"Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry,
Hang down your head Tom Dooley,
Poor boy, you're bound to die.
..........
Met her on the mountain,
There i took her life,
Met her on the mountain,
Stabbed her with my knife..."
"Poor boy"...Tom Dooley gets all the sympathy as he's about to hang. The girl he murdered hardly rates a mention.
Then there's all the songs about barely- or illegal- girls ...
"Young girl..."
"She was just seventeen, if you know what I mean..."
"You're 16, you're beautiful and you're mine"
"Sixteen candles"
"Girl, you'll be a woman soon..."
"Tonight's the night I've waited for....because you're not a baby any more..."
All a bit creepy and Delilah is just as bad.
