For those that know about the film series and or read the books, what was the point of the whole city was it cut off from the outside world due to war ect I've tried to understand the books and the wikia but I get confused trying to understand the whole purpose of it all.

From what I do understand those that are classes as divergent are the normal humans and the ones that are not are the results from the genetic engineering ?

SPOILERS

If you have read the final book, Allegiant, you find out there, that the wall was not meant to keep danger outside, but to keep them inside. All of the built society was part of a social experiment that had the objective to reach a level of peace and perfection. The wall kept the experiment in the same location and allowed the scientists of the outside world to control the people inside.

So basically the outside world existed but to those inside the wall, to them it just seemed eg a wasteland,

And I'm guessing if they had managed to make a perfect society then presumably that would of been replicated in the outside world?

Pretty much. Inside the wall was an "experiment" Those born inside were led to believe that the world outside was a dangerous wasteland. Those outside controlling the experiment were seeking "perfection"

Holy smokes, very much appreciated, it must have been going on for decades.
