It's a cryptic crossword clue (if you've seen my other thread, I've decided to try and do stuff that I've never done before and well, a cryptic crossword is one of those things

With good reason, as I now know

So - without googling or giving the answer away if you've actually done this one today - what's your answer? And more importantly, what in this clue got you there?

Because even with the answer I'm still struggling with how it translated to this

STIR COCKTAIL (7)

Fandangoes · 24/02/2023 20:19

I would imagine it is an anagram of cocktail? Stir = mix up

OchonAgusOchonOh · 24/02/2023 20:19

Martini.

Shaken not stirred from James Bond.

mynameiscalypso · 24/02/2023 20:22

I can't do cryptic crosswords at all but my parents recommend Big Dave's Crossword Blog as a good explanation of the answers.

Remember it's 7 letters

Slammer stir being prison. Today's telegraph

CharlotteOwlFace · 24/02/2023 20:24

@OchonAgusOchonOh that would be very good and I can see where you've come from

It's not right though

OP posts:
Custardbanana · 24/02/2023 20:24

Martini

The Bond thing

CharlotteOwlFace · 24/02/2023 20:25

@moonagedaydreamer oh. Thanks for ruining it already! I did say not to comment if you had done it today

OP posts:
Cococomellonn · 24/02/2023 20:25

I can't do cryptic crosswords either OP

CharlotteOwlFace · 24/02/2023 20:25

But yes, it's slammer. As someone who did it today has helpfully pointed out

OP posts:
BleepBipBoop · 24/02/2023 20:26

If martini were the answer wouldn’t the clue be “stirred cocktail”? You have to pay attention to the grammar on crossword clues, they are written very intentionally.

CharlotteOwlFace · 24/02/2023 20:26

@Cococomellonn I was doing everything. Reading backwards, looking for anagrams and overlap of words.

OP posts:
BreviloquentBastard · 24/02/2023 20:27

Slammer

CharlotteOwlFace · 24/02/2023 20:27

@BreviloquentBastard ah now did you work that out or you did the crossword today

OP posts:
BreviloquentBastard · 24/02/2023 20:28

Cross post but it's because stir is slang for prison, slammer is also slang for prison, and a slammer is a cocktail.

So stir = prison = slammer

Cococomellonn · 24/02/2023 20:28

I dont understand OP

you wanted the answer but only if not from someone who had done the crossword - why does that make a difference?

QuietlyConfident · 24/02/2023 20:29

Some clues won't succumb to the brute force approach and are just a clever bit of standalone punning wordplay. Either you spot it by thinking "maybe Stir isn't an anagram indicator, could it mean something else" or you get all the other letters, realise that SAM_R must be slammer, and then see the pun.

Buzzer3555 · 24/02/2023 20:29

Slammer another word for prison and also a cocktail

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/02/2023 20:30

I love puzzles and I'm very good at Wordle but cryptic crossword clues leave me totally cold. That one actually does make sense but I'd never have got it, and some cryptic clues just seem ridiculous.

Madcats · 24/02/2023 20:31

Apparently the Answer might be slammer?

CharlotteOwlFace · 24/02/2023 20:31

@Cococomellonn

No

I know the answer as I looked it up

I just thought I'd see if anyone else could get it and how they got it. I didn't expect someone who has done it to immediately to say 'slammer , todays telegraph'

Sort of ruins it

But it's only a silly thread so no harm done

It makes no sense to me as I've never heard stir as slang for prison.

Augend23 · 24/02/2023 20:31

I don't understand why only people who didn't do the crossword can answer?!

CharlotteOwlFace · 24/02/2023 20:32

@Buzzer3555 I couldn't get prison. I know slammer is a slang word for it but I didn't know that Stir was

So I'd never have got it anyway
