Fridge freezer stopped working

So my fridge freezer has decided it doesn’t want to keep things cold anymore.

We had a leak last month from the heating pipes above it, more of a constant drip, but the kitchen ceiling had to come down resulting a lots of dust. Maybe a coincidence, who knows…

It’s an American style, probably 6 years old.

Currently have it switched off as I have seen a few people suggest having if off for 24 hours can magically help. Has anyone had any luck with that before? And is it worth getting it fixed? Or is it time for a new one?

Think you have a different issue from me as my fridge freezer stopped working because my kitchen was too cold when we had that cold snap a while back.
After much research...I turned the dial inside the fridge to 0, turned the switch off at the wall and unplugged. Left it for an hour, turned the setting back to 4, then plugged it in and switched on. The motor started up again and all was fine. This is called a factory reset apparently.
I am assuming you have a digital display, but could attempt the reset.
Good luck.

That’s helpful to know, thank you. It is a digital display and when I’ve had a mess with it it sounded like it wanted to work, but nothing was actually happening. I’ve pulled it out and switched it off. I’ll leave it there all day and switch it on when I get back later.

Fingers crossed 🤞

Are there coils on the back and vents underneath that you can vacuum?

No, it’s covered in a metal sheet type thing. I may try and unscrew it to get access to it.

Is it both parts that have stopped working? My freezer frosted up so much that the cold air couldn't get to the fridge (so the repair man said) but the freezer was still cold.

Hope it’s sorted and switching it on it’s working.

Each machine has a different way to reset, look up the model and see if there is any information on line. I rang up the manufacturer's help line on mine and they told me how to reset it, also offered 25% off a new one. The reset worked so didn't need to take up the offer! It was a similar combination of turn off, unplug leave for a minute plug in turn on and hold one of the buttons down for 30 seconds.

If you have a drain hole at the back of the fridge check it is not blocked. Also sometimes depending on the room temp 24 is not enough sometimes needs 48-72 hours . Somtimes the freeze sysrem gets overloaded and you need to leave kong enough for the internals to defrost.

Right so I tried all the above… plugged in around 5:30 pm, we had ice cubes before bed!

This morning we have water 🙄

I had to call someone out last week for my American fridge freezer.
He took the metal grill off the back and cleaned around the condenser with a hoover to get rid of the tumble weeds of dust and animal hair.
Said that it should be done once a year, as the dust causes the unit to work harder and become less efficient.
Results have been amazing. Fridge is definitely colder and the whole thing is now silent as opposed to the popping and pinking noises that it was making.
