Red Wing Boots sizing - help!

Getting DH a pair for his birthday - it's a surprise so I can't exactly measure his feet, but seeing contrasting advice about sizing online. Should I size down? He is a hefty size 12.

Are you ordering direct from the US or a UK distributor?
US, UK, AU, and Eu all wiggle about sizing differently.

From a UK store, UK sizing. Apparently they come up big so wondering if anyone with a pair can advise whether to size down or not.

Red Wing are based out of the US, I’m in Canada and my dh and son both regularly wear buy red wing work boots and find them true to US/Can sizing. Take an insole out of a current shoe/boot?
