Online grocery shopping completely not worth it now

I have had a weekly online grocery delivery for the last few years, I mainly shop at sainsburys, but also use Ocado, sainsburys in particular has been awful the last few times for incredibly short dates on everything, even things that have to be used on the day they’re delivered! I feel like if you do the online shop they just give you all the crap dates! Maybe it’s because of the cost of living crisis so there’s more stuff left on the shelves they want to get rid of? I know you can refuse it but it’s such a pain the arse! It’s happened this much now that i’m going to have to go back to going into supermarket despite being ultra busy. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed a change with their online groceries or if it’s the particular store that mine comes from?

I think it depends. I order via Tesco and it comes from a warehouse not from a store. Have very few issues. My parent’s live a mile away and there’s comes from the store. They have more subs, short dates and out of stock items than I ever do.

But they’re two different models, @Stormyinside . You’ll know that Ocado doesn’t pick from physical shops, so do you have a separate complaint about them? Your post is a bit confusing otherwise.

(I use Ocado because they do what I want. I don’t use Sainsbury’s because they don’t!)

Yeah same. Warehouse deliveries are, in general, so much better than store-fulfilled ones.

Some supermarkets seem to do both, and it varies according to area. (Morrisons is definitely like this, maybe others are the same too.)

I'm still salty because Ocado don't deliver to central Edinburgh... Angry

To be fair Ocado is nowhere near as bad as sainsburys.

Yes, I use Tesco and Sainsburys, and both are sending stuff which expires on the day or the next day. V annoying. I don't have a car so no other option. Been sending back a lot.

I use Waitrose and Morrisons and they've both been fine.

Waitrose has better stock and have recently reduced the prices of many of their own brand products, I don't find them more expensive than other shops but the quality is better.

Morrisons won't have much fresh stuff if you try and get a delivery next day but are fine further out.

No complaints

I use Tesco and they give me the meat that expires that day for free. My order comes from an Extra store.

HaveYouSeenNancy · 23/02/2023 14:21

Yes, it's the same with Tesco, they used to advertise that their pickers were as picky as the shoppers (or something like that). Not any more they're not! I've stopped buying their bread as it's only good for toasting; if my orange Warburtons has today/ tomorrow's date on it, then it's been on their shelf for 4 days and no good for sandwiches. I like to shop once a week, but the dates on everything - especially veg (at least you can freeze meat), are making it impossible. It was a brilliant service 5 years ago, but not nearly as good now.

SurpriseSparDay · 23/02/2023 14:21

Full disclosure though - I get most of my fruit and veg via a weekly veg box as even Ocado tended to disappoint in that area.

I shop with Asda and found the same so every single "short" I reported back to them and got a refund. Not ideal when I needed the food for the week but helped in so far as I didn't pay for it. Also, freeze it on the day you receive it and bring it out the day before you need it if you can
