Nitrofurantoin for UTI - make you feel crap?

Lala1937 · 23/02/2023 13:28

I was prescribed these Monday night for a suspected UTI. Felt crappy before I started taking them (Tuesday night) and I still don’t feel great now.

The physical symptoms of hurting to wee aren’t really there anymore but I feel nauseous, no appetite, was physically sick yesterday, very tired.

I’ve taken Nitro before and don’t remember feeling like this. Should I ride it out and take the last 2, or call my GP?

Any other symptoms apart from nausea? Back pain? Fever? If so could be kidney infection which nitro won't help

Seeline · 23/02/2023 13:46

Nitro can make you feel sick and cause vomitting.
Make sure you take it with (lots of) food.

Sorry if this sounds alarmist, but I had a bad reaction to it once, stopped taking and then sometime later took another prescription for it out of desperation and I think it damaged my health in a medium-long term way. In particular it seemed to give me asthma like symptoms, along the other things that you’ve described, which never completely went away. Doesn’t seem to be common but I did find a couple of case reports of something similar. Of course the doctor didn’t believe me… Sorry for the long meandering answer but to conclude - listen to your body and ask for a different prescription, it’s not worth the regret just to avoid being a nuisance!

Lala1937 · 23/02/2023 13:53

@Seeline the problem is I don’t want to eat anything at all, I’ve gone off food 😔

Did they send a sample off? It might be that its not the correct antibiotics for the type of bacteria causing the infection?

My DS had a prescription of this recently and a weird allergic reaction - had had it before with no probs - very strange

LizzieBrooks · 23/02/2023 14:52

It made me feel terrible for approx 6 hours after each dose. Really woozy, blurry vision and sleepy. Far, far worse than I felt from the UTI. Seemed to improve throughout the course, I guess as my body adjusted to it.

Lala1937 · 23/02/2023 15:26

@Sharkpenis they didn’t send a sample off no as it wasn’t enough. I am waiting for the GP to call me as I don’t feel “right”.

Drop a sample off for them to send off. My son had a very severe uti that didnt respond to antibiotics.

Nitro makes me nauseaous - lots of fluids helped last time I had it.

extramaturecheddarcheese · 23/02/2023 16:05

Oh this one makes you feel rotten always. I had it and felt awful and my elderly dad had the same. Nausea and lack of appetite to the point of the thought of food making you gip.

Lala1937 · 23/02/2023 16:46

@extramaturecheddarcheese yes exactly. No food is appealing to me right now at all - but I also had lost my appetite before I started the nitro as well.

I'm on tablet 5/6 of Nitro currently and haven't had any adverse reactions , I was prescribed them even though my pee test was clear from the dip test in the surgery and now clear from the lab test at the hospital.
I haven't been feeling right though and presumed it was a UTI.
I've even been having some urinary urge incontinence 😮, nitro seems to have helped with the urge symptoms at least and I've had no side effects , I'm sorry to hear they're not helping you OP I would definitely give your surgery a call tomorrow and explain how you're feeling.
I wish you well
