Is this heartburn?

Hello all - I'm 16 weeks pregnant and have been up since about 4am with a really strong pain moving between my throat, chest and stomach. In my throat it feels like the kind of ache where you are holding in a huge sob (😅) but elsewhere it's more like burning.

I've never really had heartburn before, but that was my first thought. Does that seem about right? Just raided the cupboards and unfortunately our antacids are out of date so I'm probably stuck like this until the shops open. Thanks for any experiences!

I've never been pregnant but have had heartburn. Do you have any bicarbonate of soda? It's deeply unpleasant-tasting but will work as an antacid in a pinch.

JarByTheDoor · 23/02/2023 05:08

Though personally I'd go with the out of date antacid tablets before resorting to the bicarb… there's nothing in there that's going to degrade to anything horrible, or that will stop working because an expiry date has passed by.

Oh, unless it's so old that it's got ranitidine in it, in which case definitely throw it away because that stuff does degrade to something nasty.

Don’t have Pitt of date meds - have a glass of milk.

Out of date

Thank you, @JarByTheDoor - no bicarb unfortunately (I've been trying to get hold of some for cleaning for a while!). Sitting in bed quite still for a while with distractions is helping a bit but I'm conscious that I will feel rubbish for the day if I can't get back to sleep soon. Slightly depressed that the street lights have just come on outside!

There's a bicarb shortage now too?! Joy…

I hope you manage to get some sleep tonight.

Thanks, @Orchidflower1. Saw a few recommendations for milk online, but then a couple saying to completely avoid dairy, citrus etc. Maybe that's more of a general dietary thing rather than in the moment?

@JarByTheDoor hoping it's just the shops by me being rubbish but I wouldn't be surprised if it were the next thing! Also hoping you're not up against your wishes 💐

Just an odd sleep pattern here, saw your thread and didn't want to leave you alone in the dark with heartburn pain cause it's foul 😔

One thing that can help a little is experimenting with different positions <ahem> — lying on one side versus the other, or with your head and shoulders raised on pillows (or on your front, but I don't know whether that's an option for you at the moment). It can sometimes take the edge off a little, at least, though admittedly I don't know if that's the same with pregnancy heartburn.

(obviously that thought was only before another poster also came on, too)
