Help with broadband speeds question please

I have to get a new broadband set up at home and it's the first time I'm doing this (due to divorce) as XH used to take care of these things.

The package we had was with BT and it has download speeds of 25-28 mbps and upload speeds of 5-6 mbps.

But when I look online to compare, every other package available (with either BT or other providers) seems MILES faster than this, and cheaper too. Like 75 or 150 average speeds. We had decent/good internet, with two people working from home and doing zoom calls etc. Am I missing something? Am I not comparing like with like? Any help gratefully received.

Price depends on what package you signed up for eg just broadband, broadband and phoneline, any extras such as wireless adaptors or unbreakable internet etc. BT download speeds are usually around 35MB for the basic package, so your 28MB is a bit slow unless you are really rural or at the end of the line far from the cabinet.
BT will have quoted you a minimum g'teed speed.
What pack did you sign up for? The basic BT BB is about £28 and BB with phone is about £34

The “average” speeds they quote are the average over all their customers. It is not necessarily what you will get at your specific location.

Given the speeds you quote, I suspect that you are not comparing like with like. You may be comparing the technology available to your location with a higher spec technology only available elsewhere. Fibre to the premises (FTTP) which is capable of very high speeds with slower fibre to the cabinet (FTTC), for example.
