60's and 70's flatmates was this a thing?

Just that really. Was it common practice for members of the opposite sex to flat share in the 60's and 70's? Or would this have been frowned upon at the time?? Does anyone know?

Well the sitcom Man About The House was based on this exact situation. It was early 70s. So it was unusual enough to be seen as a source of humour but not overly shocking as it was prime time tv.

LOL - did a load of house shares / flat shares in London throughout the 70's and 80's - yes, mixed sex flat shares were common. You wouldn't room share, generally, unless it was a sexual partner, but same sex room shares were really common to save money. I room shared with 4 different women during my time sharing.

My mother has told me that “mixed flatting” was considered quite daring when she was at university in the mid sixties.

My Sis flat shared in late 70's / early 80's and yes, there was a mixture of M & F. Just depended on who was looking for a room at the time.

Absolutely in the 70s, especially in student flats.

My friend told me her mother flat shared with this man she is still intouch with. I just wondered if that was code for something else, or if this was a thing back then? Seems like it was more common than I thought.

Have you never watched Man About The House?! You're missing a treat if not.
Of course people used to flatshare!

GiantKitten · 21/02/2023 23:15

I was in a mixed student flat in 69-70 - 4 girls and 1 boy. 3 of the girls shared a room, the other 2 had a room each.
There were no shenanigans, but could have been if anybody wanted them!

I flat shared with men, with women and in mixed houses when I first lived in London in the seventies. Couldn’t wait to get my own flat, though.

My mum house-shared with both men and women from about 1965 onwards, in London. That's how she met my father.

Very common in America then. My first shared apartment, opposite sex, friend only, 1978.
