Test driving new car when looking for a used car

My car is dying and I need a new one. I will have to get a used one for financial reasons but there are currently none of the model I'm interested in available used close enough to test drive. I am arranging an appointment to test drive a new one locally, so that I can see if I like it, and then if I do I can get whichever used one is best from further afield.

The dealer do not have a new model here - but will get one in for me to test drive. Is it bad to have them do this when I have no intention of buying new? This dealer do approved used sales, and I'd be quite happy to get my used one through them.

If I do get them to bring a new one in specially for me to test - should I tell them I'm actually in the market for used or not?

My one and only car buying experience was 11 years ago and I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing.

Why not test drive one of their used models if they have what you want?

They don't currently have any used ones. I just need to try the car out to see if it's the right one. I thought they'd have one on site when I requested a text drive, but they've come back saying it'll be a few days because they have to bring one in.

I wouldn't worry too much. Just do the test drive and see how you get on.

If they try and push the purchase of s new car just say you'll think about it.

Test drives are all part of buying (and selling) cars. I test drove seven different cars before finally choosing the one I got.

Thanks. So it's not totally immoral? Grin

It's absolutely fine!

And if you love it then talk to them and they can try and source one for your budget.

I test drove a new car, when they knew I wanted a used one. I don't see the issue!

Thank you. Phew!
