How do I contact Scottish Power if I don't have an account with them?

Any ideas welcome please.
I've received an electricity bill from them today. I dont have an account with them and haven't for about 6 years. The bill is addressed to my address but another person (who could never possibly have lived here) and the supply address is listed as a property 1/2 mile away.

I've tried ringing SP but the message says they're only dealing with vulnerable people by phone. It directs me to chat bot online but that won't let me chat unless I register as an account holder - which clearly I'm not wanting to do.

I could drop the bill at the supplied property but that doesn't get over the issue of my address being the billing address! Plus the bill says "final statement" so not sure if the account holder is moving or just changing suppliers.

Any ideas?

There is a Facebook group about SP and problems people have with them, it might be worthwhile having a look on there.

Slightly old fashioned answer for this kind of stupid company: write a letter. Keep a record of it.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/02/2023 11:34

Yes, write a letter and enclose the bill. Did you open it? Technically it’s your address but not addressed to you so returning it as ‘unknown at this address’ is appropriate.

bigbluebus · 20/02/2023 11:43

@Hadalifeonce I'll try and find that FB group.

It's so long since I've written a letter to a big company I'd kind of forgotten it was an option! So used to chat bots, email, phone (hanging on for 45 mins!) these days. Just a shame about the extortionate price of a stamp! I may have to resort to that though.

Good luck!

Scottish Power are the most horrendous company to deal with.

I second writing a letter, enclosing the wrong bill. Keep copies of both though, as they will probably ignore and start sending you even more nonsensical stuff.

AllWorkYoPlait · 20/02/2023 12:01

I'd just chuck it back in the post box "not known at this address".

catandcoffee · 20/02/2023 12:04

Apparently my electric is now with Scottish Power, but I've never changed to them.

Only become aware as my current gas/ electric supplier told me. Very confusing

bigbluebus · 20/02/2023 12:24

@catandcoffee I live in an area where Scottish Power are the actually electricity suppliers but haven't bought my electricity from them for years. I'm very much still with EDF - I've got their app showing my account. So there's been no switching. This bill quite clearly relates to a meter at another property - it's just addressed to my house!

Just call them.

The priority message doesn’t mean they’ll refuse to deal with you over the phone - just means they would rather you tried other means that are available to you.

if you were an account holder you could use the chat bot but you’re not, so contact them by phone.

If you don't have any success try going through 'Resolver'. It's a free complaint handling service. You can use one of their templates or write your own email. I have found that Scottish Power do resond to emails received through them.

Use the chat bot and type talk to a person. Usually takes a few goes for someone to actually pick up the message but that's what I've had most success with. They are a fucking nightmare to get through to!

@Itsonlyagame You have to sign in to an account to use the chatbot. I don't have an account with them.

Took @DrWhoNowww advice and ignored the 'vulnerable only' message on the phone. Hit random options on their menu choices (as none were applicable) and requested a call back. After 1/2 an hour I actually got a call back and spoke to a real person who could not offer any explanation as to why my address appears on this bill, or indeed when it was put on there but she has assured me she's changed the billing address back to the supply address, so let's hope that's the end of the matter.

If you still have the envelope put it back in there, seal it and cross out your address, put return to sender, not known at this address and put it back in the post

it does get returned to them
