On Friday I started to get earache in my right ear. Sharp shooting pain deep inside my ear every time I spoke, coughed, sneezed, basically did anything. By midday I lost all hearing in that ear. I spoke to a GP at half 6 on Friday over the phone
who gave me antibiotics. Today I’ve lost all hearing in my left ear. It’s all very sudden. I now have ringing which feels like it s going through my head. Like static or white noise. I have a horrible headache and stiff neck. I can’t even hear my 2 year calling for me. DH is off to work at 6am and I have no idea how I’ll cope with no hearing all of a sudden. I can take pain killers for the pain but I can’t do anything for the hearing loss. Please don’t tell me to ring the GP in the morning like DH did as I cannot hear. It’s very disorientating

I think your dh should ring 111 for you (on your behalf) to ask for advice.

Exasperatednow · 19/02/2023 20:43

And I feel sorry for you. Sounds (pardon the unintentional pun) awful.

ziggiestardust · 19/02/2023 20:44

I’m pretty sure a loss of hearing is an emergency OP. That is NOT normal.

A and E now

He’s Unfortunately gone off to sleep. He has this thing where he thinks I’m over doing it until something is so bad I’m rushed to hospital. I wonder if I can contact 111 myself online. Off to have a look

WhyyArePeopleLikeThis · 19/02/2023 21:24

I dragged him up to ring 111 for me. They made an appointment with my GP for tomorrow. Not sure how I’ll sleep tonight as this static sound is intense. For the pain I can take the cocodomol which was prescribed on Friday but that doesn’t stop this feeling or the loss of hearing. I really feel for those who have long term hearing loss.

ziggiestardust · 19/02/2023 23:19

This is probably not what this is, but it’s summer for us here and so far I know of 2 people (one in immediate circle, one just outside of that), who have inadvertently swallowed steel brush hairs from those wire bbq cleaning brushes, which have then been left on the grill by accident after the brush sheds and then goes into the food when it’s cooked. They’re talking about banning them in my county. You haven’t cleaned your oven or grill with a wire brush have you? Because it’s just the area and the pain onset… it feels really familiar with what people have told me that’s all. I hope you get answers quickly!

Thankfully not. It’s still too cold for bbq weather in the UK. Woke up this morning feel like someones smashed me over the head. Told DH to do nursery run today

Is it worth calling your local audiologist (equivalent of the opticians) and asking their opinion?

piedbeauty · 20/02/2023 07:45

The headache and stiff neck worry me - makes me think of meningitis. Can you stand bright light? Can you touch your chin to your chest?

I would also worry about this - a friend’s brother had meningitis, which caused sudden hearing loss. Before this I didn’t know that it could cause hearing loss.

I’d go straight to A&E.

I do have an audiologist as I already have issues with my right ear. (Tinnitus and eardrum vibrates too much). They just said well we’ve already sent off for a MRI you just need to wait for that appointment. Hoping the GP calls me early enough where my DH can speak to them. Had to get him to start later today so he can do the nursery run.

the bright light is bearable. I can touch my chin to neck but it’s a lot of pull at the back of my neck to do so.

Do you know what other symptoms your friends brother had. It’s all very bizarre. I feel like the constant ringing/static is contributing to the headache x

ThelmaDinkley · 20/02/2023 08:21

I would go to a and e to be honest as don’t want to worry you but middle ear infections can spread to the brain and the headache and stiffness doesn’t sound right. You might need IV antibiotics. Good luck.

RatedAce · 20/02/2023 08:24

Your DH sounds AWFUL! Awful awful awful.
.

RatedAce · 20/02/2023 08:25

And good luck today - poor you OP. x

piedbeauty · 20/02/2023 08:29

Meningitis symptoms are here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/meningitis/symptoms/

Sudden deafness is not mentioned, but I'd go to A&E today, to rule out anything serious.

Orangesandlemons77 · 20/02/2023 08:30

OP I have had severe ear pain too and awaiting a call back this morning from the GP.

However with me we know what it is- shingles, which I first got on the right side of the face a few weeks ago.

Do you have any rash or spots in or near your ear?

Shingles can sometimes cause such pain and something called Ramsey hunt syndrome.

I also have some spots, numbness on the side of the face. Thankfully not on the eye which the GPs were worried about.

I'm also getting this vertigo, nausea and dizziness which they have given me something for.

For shingles, you can get it without the rash sometimes. They need to give you antivirals asap if it is that maybe worth mentioning

Hope you get help soon, it's horrible this pain Flowers

Orangesandlemons77 · 20/02/2023 08:31

Also getting hearing loss on that side with the tinnitus, which is what i am calling them about today.

Orangesandlemons77 · 20/02/2023 09:19

How are you doing OP? I had a call back from the GP and they are going to increase my pain meds. But with me they know what is going on.

They can see you same day, if urgent, might be easier than waiting in A&E for hours.

WhyyArePeopleLikeThis · 20/02/2023 09:45

Hi all I have an update. So I’ve just spoken to my GP. He said the pre existing issue is called ‘Patulous Eustachian tube dysfunction?’They think it’s related to what I’m having now. He said the MRI letter has been sent out so we are just waiting for the letter to arrive. He said the antibiotics are just precautionary but to continue it alongside the cocodomol. The GP told me to reduce caffeine and increase water as this can sometimes help xx

surely I need more help.

I don’t have a rash or anything. Looking at me I look fine. No bruising, rash, discolouration. They kept asking if I have any blisters around my ear but I don’t. I hope you get sorted soon xx

Orangesandlemons77 · 20/02/2023 10:37

Oh that is good they know what is going on. I hope you feel better soon. I spoke to my GP and they think I have neuralgia post shingles. Getting more pain meds. Fingers crossed things improve for us both x
