i tend to use it as a grill only but my main fan oven is broken,
what is the deal about using the top oven
it is smaller, is it more economical?

Of course it’s more economical to heat a smaller space.

that’s why a 2 bed flat is cheaper to heat than a 7 bed house.

fwiw I only break out the bottom oven on Xmas day when I’ve got loads to do.

Seeline · 19/02/2023 10:52

I tend to just use the grill too apart from Christmas dinner.
Most if the time now I am only cooking for 2 so probably should use it more as it must be cheat, but it takes so much longer to heat up than the big fan oven.

Seeline · 19/02/2023 10:53

Cheaper not cheat 🙄!

In theory should be more economical, but ours takes an age to get to temperature, so it’s on for longer. I do use it for smaller things like garlic bread etc but wouldn’t use it for baking as temp so unreliable.

Allmarbleslost · 19/02/2023 11:00

Mostly just for the grill. It only really gets used as an oven at Christmas!

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/02/2023 11:01

that's interesting @FatSealSmugSoup
would you use it for a casserolle or a roast?

greenacrylicpaint · 19/02/2023 11:02

we mainly used the top oven.
more economical.
plus was great for baking as fan can be very drying.

MajesticWhine · 19/02/2023 11:02

Yep only for the grill or on Christmas Day. I see a pattern here.

Floralnomad · 19/02/2023 11:05

I use a halogen oven on a daily basis and the bottom oven if something is too big for the halogen ( Christmas etc) , the top oven is for storing the baking trays !

Ilikewinter · 19/02/2023 11:06

Are you me OP 😂😂 .... our main oven broke about 3 weeks ago so for the first time we have been using the top grill as the oven.
Its actually worked much better than I thought, but its obviously more restrictive. We seem to be managing ok for now.

Baldieheid · 19/02/2023 11:06

Mine gets used all the time, if I can fit all the food in. It heats up way faster than the bigger bottom oven, 5 mins tops. Bottom can take 20 mins to come to temp.
Bottom is preferred for cake baking as I get a better rise but both are pretty good.

havetochangethis · 19/02/2023 11:07

Mainly to heat the plates!

MothBat · 19/02/2023 11:07

We mainly use the main oven with fan as it is cheaper than the top oven which only has elements. Use top oven for grilling or if we need to cook at different temperatures.

dawnc27 · 19/02/2023 11:09

my top one isnt cheaper as the bottom is a fan but top isnt. i tend to use it if kids want something after me when ive used the grill as its already nearly heated

ILoveASpreadsheet · 19/02/2023 11:10

Heat plates, keeping food warm if oven is on and too high, grilling and Christmas. I wouldn’t be without it.

We have almost exclusively used the top oven since we moved into this house as there is no manual for the larger one and I haven’t figured out exactly how it works. I tend to stab at the buttons until it finally turns on. In the past two weeks both ovens have packed in. So I’ve had a terrible time finding replacements as they are both very old.

Hi, I'm hoping you can help me with a project I'm doing for my design course. It might sound like a daft question, but when you cook do you use all the rings on the cooker? I tend to just use the front two all the time so the back two are really not needed. It would be great if you could help!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 27/11/2024 00:00

We don’t really use a ‘big’ oven, there are only two of us most of the time, and I use my micro combi for virtually everything . We don’t grill in the microwave though, so the top oven is used for grilling.

I’ve just bought and had installed a Hotpoint under counter double oven which has a very good grill in the top, and a small fan oven underneath; so far, we are really pleased with it. It has a slow cook function which means the old slow cooker (never really liked it anyway) can be disposed of; the Combi is sitting in the tower where the eye level oven used to be, really convenient.

DinosaurOfFire · 27/11/2024 00:06

@Jacqduke You may be better off making your own thread? You would get more replies. As a response though- I use the back two rings the most, they are furthest away from small children and also both "medium" sized rings and fit the pans I use the most as the flames shouldn't be wider than the pot- I use a gas hob. But when I cook something mildy interesting for 5 of us at once, I usually use 3- 4 rings (this is about twice a week usually. Sometimes more, rarely less.)

suki1964 · 27/11/2024 00:11

Big oven is only used when we have a house full - more then 6

Top oven now gets rarely used

Air fryer is used now

Incakewetrust · 27/11/2024 00:26

I have one big oven and two small ones (range cooker). I only use the top one as a grill unless it's Christmas (all 3 get used then).
They seem to work well but not as good as the main oven. Some spots are hotter than others.

Enough4me · 27/11/2024 00:32

Large airfryer all the way. Haven't used my top oven for years but it's great for storage.

I've used mine to roast a small turkey crown or butterflied turkey for a few Christmases.
