Are convicted pedophiles generally safe in custody? *TRIGGER WARNING CSA*

Terrible tragedy is currently unfolding in our community. An eleven year old girl went missing, was thankfully found but now a middle aged man has been charged in relation to her disappearance with sexual assault, abduction and indecent images. It’s harrowing but if you read the comments there is so much rhetoric about justice happening in prison when the other inmates get to him and so on. It got me wondering if that’s really the case. I thought they would be housed separately.

Interesting but I can't imagine it actually taking place fortunately/unfortunately 😕😕

LakeTiticaca · 18/02/2023 22:18

They have a separate wing, the "nonce wing" but talking to a friend who has served a short prison sentence (not a paedo) he tells me that there are ways and means of getting to them.
He didn't expand on it though!!

user764329056 · 18/02/2023 22:28

They’re normally protected under Rule 43 and kept with others just like them but have heard of them being attacked by prisoners in general population

TellMeAboutItAnotherTime · 18/02/2023 22:30

its our job to keep them safe. we have ways to ensure this too

its fine. in most cases there will be no conflict

gawditswindy · 18/02/2023 22:31

I'd have thought it'd take a wee while though. He'd (I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about) be pretty isolated till he's actually found guilty, I'd imagine.

TellMeAboutItAnotherTime · 18/02/2023 22:35

you can't keep people isolated for long periods....how would that work? they are kept on wings but still all mix together

OneFrenchEgg · 18/02/2023 22:38

I think it's shocking people enjoy the thought of this. We are better than this. Prison should be safe and a method of removing liberty and providing rehabilitation where appropriate and possible. Not some hideous law of the jungle.

Some of us find it hard to believe rehabilitation is possible. I am biased. I was sexually abused extensively for four years of my childhood. I'm not convinced that bastard will ever be safe out on the streets. And the thought of someone giving him a beating inside does give me some sort of validation in a weird way. For years I felt nothing. But now I'm a mother, I feel things I've never felt before.

TellMeAboutItAnotherTime · 18/02/2023 22:52

a 'beating in prison' puts other people in danger. we have to go in and risk injury ourselves, as well as any bystanders, padmates etc

its dangerous, so no, its in no way encouraged

OneFrenchEgg · 18/02/2023 22:56

I don't believe child sex abusers can be rehabilitated, I was talking generally. It's not a safe place for anyone. But I still don't think anyone should be beaten by vigilantes.

Paedophiles can't be rehabilitated. That is a well known fact

Paedophilia can't be cured by professionals.

Source? Pretty sure that’s wrong.

I have a friend who is a prison doctor. New arrivals never fare well, sex offenders fare even less well.

OneFrenchEgg · 18/02/2023 23:24

Funny how posters jump on something without reading subsequent posts.
Anyway, in general - rehabilitation for prisoners where possible, not specifically talking about sex offenders. I think prison should not be a place where vigilante justice takes place, cheered from the sidelines by people.

Well that's not my experience working in a cat b men's prison

And ours is pretty rough! We go to great lengths to keep seperate for everyone's safety

blueshoes · 18/02/2023 23:31

Paedos are segregated from the general prison population. Very high profile inmates might even be isolated. It is the job of the prison to keep their inmates safe. More than those animals deserve but apparently we are a civilised society even if the offenders are not.

Frankldearest · 18/02/2023 23:32

I don't know whether this man identifying as trans will make a difference to how they deal with him. If they don't continue with their policy of putting trans identifying men (transwomen) in women's prison, maybe they'll set up a separate wing for them in the men's prison. This man has been dressing as a woman and calling himself a transwoman and arguing for more trans rights for years, so I don't see why he wouldn't continue to claim he's a woman after conviction, on the basis that that can be expected to get him softer treatment.

Northernsouloldies · 18/02/2023 23:32

On MN male violence is normally seen as abhorrent but here in this instance we have people wanting prison justice. I feel for the girl having gone through this trauma plus she is clearly identifiable within her community. This guy getting a doing in prison is not going to change that.

blueshoes · 18/02/2023 23:34

Violence being done to you in prison adds to the deterrent effect of incarceration. An eye for an eye. I can see the logic though I understand we don't go for it as we are civilised society.

I wonder how prisons in the US work.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 18/02/2023 23:39

This fucking bastard identifies as a woman, by the way, and has done for years. So under the Scottish government's proposed Gender Recognition Reform, "she" would go to a women's prison. This is only not going ahead because the press have finally got the guys to report things accurately and because Westminster stepped in and used a veto power that has never before been used to stop the Scottish parliament putting into action.

He abducted and raped an eleven year old girl. I hope someone beats him to death.

TellMeAboutItAnotherTime · 18/02/2023 23:44

@SirSamVimesCityWatch

Nobody will be beating him to death though. Do you want officers to be put in danger in that scenario then?

No, and I accept it's probably unrealistically. But I won't stop wanting that to happen.

Brunts12 · 18/02/2023 23:46

@SirSamVimesCityWatch absolutely agree with you.
The bastard will get the luxury of being segregated.

This paedo got killed in prison by another inmate. No officers got hurt.

Trigger warning. Don't click into link if you cannot cope with gruesome descriptions: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-humber-55061443
