What would happen if ...

I pressed 1, when instructed to, on a phone call purporting to be from HMRC notifying me that I have not paid my taxes and there is a warrant out for my arrest.

I had one of these calls this morning from a mobile. I only listened to the first bit, hung up and blocked the number. However, a couple of hours later they called back from a different number. Again, I hung up and blocked.

What I want to know is, has anyone followed the instructions and pressed 1 to "speak to an adviser" and if so, who, if anyone, was on the other end? If you do go ahead and press 1, does this somehow enable the spammers to access my phone/online banking?

They won't have access to any details but you have confirmed that you are a real person who at least listened to their message and was concerned enough to press a button. All that will happen is that you will get more calls - annoying but not actually going to lose you any money (or get you arrested)

Thanks Spotty. Certainly don't want any more calls so won't press 1 if they call again. Not been arrested yet, so hopefully I'm safe 😁
