Can anyone recommend a really good mattress topper please?

New ish bed. Bed was pretty cheap and it came with a mattress so obviously not the best quality. It's a bit of a temporary measure at the moment but I absolutely cannot sleep on it for much longer as it's killing my back when I lie on my back and my hips when I lie on my side. The mattress is so hard it's like sleeping on a concrete slab. I'm thinking that a decent topper may be a good plan for now but not sure what to get. Any recommendations?

I wondered if memory foam would be the way to go. I've been in pain all day today and I'm waking up 3/4 times a night because of this stupid mattress. I'm sure I saw someone on here mention a Panda topper a while ago but I can't find the post. I didn't need one at the time!

I got this a while ago and it's very comfortable - it's also machine washable which is handy.

Dorma Tencel memory foam from Dunelm, this topper is amazing. It's not cheap though £190 for a double £225 for kingsize.

My sister has a panda topper from Amazon, she really likes that one.

HundredMilesAnHour · 15/02/2023 20:37

I have a goose down topper from Soak & Sleep. Best purchase ever. Very hard to get out of bed now. 😉

Panda mattress topper. A recent purchase and v pleased

SkalengeckOrSiegbarste · 15/02/2023 20:44

We got one from Dunelm. I can't remember exactly which one, but it was a memory foam one, we have a superking & it cost about £180. Totally worth it! I was pregnant when we got it and really struggling to get comfortable. The topper helped so much. DH loves it too.

Craftybodger · 15/02/2023 20:55

It depends what you want it for. Memory foam are good to add comfort. Down are good for additional warmth. I’ve had both and really liked both. Have to have a down topper now, need to keep warm!

Literally just making the bed with brand new wool-filled topper from Devon Duvets - v excited to think it might improve my aching joints and get a better night's sleep

GET AN IKEA HOVAG MATTRESS IMMEDIATELY!

Sorry to shout but it’s the same price as a decent topper and they are so dang comfortable you will thank me.

Stick the new mattress on gumtree and sleep well every night.

TitaniasAss · 15/02/2023 21:49

It's def for comfort, not warmth. The Hovag mattress is just more than I can afford right now I'm afraid so I'm leaning towards the Panda because I can afford it and it gets great reviews. I just want to be comfortable in my bed! Gone are the days when I could sleep on anything, I want my comfort dammit!

Silentnight Airmax mattress topper

Affordable and brilliant

Wilma55 · 15/02/2023 22:05

We use a panda topper in our campervan and its made the world of difference. Also have a John Lewis memory foam which is good. Both 5cm.

skaredykat · 15/02/2023 22:56

I found memory foam too hot - like lying on a radiator by the middle of the night because your body heat doesn't dissipate. I ditched it, along with my old mattress, in favour of a new but cheapish Ikea mattress (HÖVÅG) and a cool mattress topper from M&S.

LegArmpits · 15/02/2023 23:04

We bought a Panda topper in February 2020 and it's still going strong and has made a huge difference to an old mattress.

Ostryga · 15/02/2023 23:06

Hovag is £30 more. I promise you if you can cope with another month of crap sleep you’ll thank me.

A topper works for for a few months, a mattress works for years.

TheTeenageYears · 15/02/2023 23:53

Panda topper - do you have access to Costco? It's cheaper there. They also sell them reconditioned on eBay which I nearly bought when they were out of stock at Costco but were restocked the day I went to order. We have 4 in different sizes. I also can't live without my Panda pillow.

Thatnameistaken · 16/02/2023 06:11

We have tried a few including the panda but I found the memory foam too hot.
We've now got the dormeo octasmart topper and love it.

I definitely don't want down for warmth. I like a cool bed and room. My goose down topper is super-comfy and has zero impact on temperature.

I actually copied my bed setup from Sofitel as their beds are the most comfy hotel beds that I've ever slept in (Sofitel are known for their beds and food).

Does the cool mattress topper work? I currently have a panda but wake up ridiculously warm.

Yes, in the sense that it is cooler than the memory foam - I don't get the radiator feeling with it. I wouldn't say it is cool, just not so uncomfortably hot.

I bought the Dormeo octasmart too and I hate it. Slides around, not particularly comfortable. Bought a £45ish fabric one from Dunelm, so much better.

TyneTeas · 12/03/2024 23:35

I got a Fogarty Anti Allergy Memory Foam Mattress Topper from Dunelm a few years ago and I was surprised at how much it improved the bed
