DD mole on leg - asymmetrical and two colours

Hi all, DD has for a long time had a largeish mole on her leg about 7-8mm across. It is asymmetrical in border with a ragged edge and is two colours (whiter in the middle). It is hard to show on here. A few years ago I took her to the Dr to show them who sort of waved us out of the surgery, I think because she was young and it was unlikely to be anything serious maybe she readily dismissed it. But it is clearly asymmetric and two colours.

But I remain worried about it. As far as I can tell it's not changed in that time, although to be fair I can't locate the old photo - but I do wonder if we were too readily dismissed at the time? I've attached a pic in case helpful although it is hard to show here and you can't see the discolouration very easily.

Has anyone else got experience of similar situations? Should I get a second opinion? She seems to have quite a few moles, some more recent including a raised one. I don't want to bother the GP unnecessarily - is there a mole clinic type thing that people can go along to? Just wondering about alternatives to bothering the GP as I always feel like I am bothering them unnecessarily.

I have one a bit like that. It's been checked by a consultant dermatologist who wasn't worried at all. I'll try to attach a picture. Mine is flat almost like two freckles overlapping.

Ask the GP re mole clinic

I have had moles like that for 50 years! Never been looked at by a doctor. Why would you bother about this?

midgemadgemodge · 15/02/2023 15:20

If it changes then worry

I know the guidelines talk about ragged edges but it's really changes that matter

Chibbin · 15/02/2023 15:23

@Hbh17 it's not your place to dismiss OPs concerns about this, presumably from your comment you are not opining from a trained medical point of view?

@ethermint I see no issue in getting this checked out by the doctor.

I have loads of moles like this- I've had some checked by the doctor and they said there's nothing to worry about as they were 'symmetrically asymmetrical'. If you are concerned get it checked but it looks fine.

ÉireannachÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉ · 15/02/2023 15:25

No harm in getting it checked

Emmamoo89 · 15/02/2023 15:26

Get it checked

Please ignore this. It's potentially dangerous advice!

I once got a mole checked, it was an awkward position for me to get a clear look at but it looked different to how I remembered it. The GP wasn't concerned, but said it was worth being checked if there was a doubt.

WanderingWildflower · 15/02/2023 15:30

I have one like this, I also heard about the two colours thing and couldn’t get a GP appointment so I went for one of those private skin checks. They imaged it but weren’t worried but said to go back if it has changed in a few months time, which it hasn’t so far. It wasn’t cheap but worth it for peace of mind I think.

lieselotte · 15/02/2023 17:33

It looks ok to me, but if you are concerned, contact the GP. Do you have e-consult or similar? You can send a photo and they'll see her if they want to have a closer look.

Much better to contact the GP and be told it's ok than not to bother and it not to be ok.

OliverBabish · 15/02/2023 19:07

Two colours means two different colours - not two shades of brown. So you’d be looking for brown and black, purple etc.

get it checked and keep a pic and measurement of it for future reference.
