Film recommendation for me and teen son?

FuckingHateRats · 14/02/2023 16:49

Due to DH working and my other kids' social plans, it's only me and my nearly 16yr old son in the house this evening. We've planned a nice tea and he's agreed to watch a film with me - hoping for recommendations to get it right.

He's really interested in war / MI9 / spies / space / space race.

Otherwise we'll end up watching a Marvel film we've watched for the millionth time!

Thank you all.

Matrix?
Have you seen all the new bond films?
There are a few based around presidents and conspiracy theories
All the president's men?
If he hasn't seen series Spooks could make a good start on that

frozendaisy · 14/02/2023 17:05

Mission impossible anything but makes more sense in order

The Bourne trilogy

BadHabitsGoodFun · 14/02/2023 17:08

Bridge of Spies
All Quiet on the Western Front
1917

All are excellent. Or Dunkirk?

Captain Phillips is also very good - not war but piracy but lots of suspense.

AnnPerkins · 14/02/2023 17:17

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the Gary Oldman version?

Band of Brothers? It's a box set but you could start with a couple of episodes.

All Quiet on the Western Front is an excellent film. But veeery long. We had to do it over three evenings.

FKATondelayo · 14/02/2023 17:18

Martian
Ad Astra
Hidden Figures
Prometheus

FuckingHateRats · 14/02/2023 17:18

All excellent shouts. Band of Brothers particularly, I think he might love it. Have sent him trailer links and told him to make his decision.

Thanks all!

The Martian is his favourite of all time novel and film. He's seen and watched it about twenty times each 🤣

Ooh Band of Brothers is amazing - watched that on the back of Saving Private Ryan!

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/02/2023 17:33

I do a film club at college and the most enjoyed film we watched recently was Zoolander (they requested it). I know it’s not the genres you’ve mentioned but it was such a hit!

AlwaysLatte · 14/02/2023 17:40

I've watched the whole Breaking Bad series with my teen son, we love it (plus El Camino and Better Call Saul' for afterwards. He wanted to watch a Bollywood film which we did a few nights ago and that was quite different (long though!) other films we've together are all the karate kid films and Kingsman films and he's into some 80s/90s films. We're going to watch The Kolminski Method and 21 this week.

Olympus has Fallen

Band of Brothers was my & DH's 'courting' TV show. Watched it again recently and it stands the of time. So many now familiar faces in it.

If you've not seen Edge of Tomorrow / Live, Die, Repeat that covers war & sci-fi and it's a decent watch.

WinterFoxes · 14/02/2023 17:48

Bridge of Spies
Don't Look Up
Captain Phillips
Burn After Reading is a comic spy movie
Skyfall

Has he seen classic modern films like The Social Network

FuckingHateRats · 14/02/2023 17:52

He's asked to watch Hacksaw Ridge. Fine with me!

And it's off. Forgot how violent and gory it is 😬 Poor kid was horrified.

Band of Brothers E1 now on.

JoJo Rabbit

Good shout.

AnnPerkins · 15/02/2023 09:51

Oh yes definitely JoJoRabbit! DS has watched that multiple times now. We also liked all the Kingsman films.

We watched The Imitation Game on Sunday, all really enjoyed that. And we're avidly watching The Last of Us on Now TV. It's not just ordinary zombie apocalypse stuff.

Hope you enjoyed Band of Brothers @FuckingHateRats
