The voiles that are up are a temporary solution but this window is a problem. The room is south facing. The window is virtually the height of the wall. It’s like living in a greenhouse - baking hot when the sun shines, freezing when the weather gets chilly. Just to help there’s a stupid L shaped thin window at one side with a great big joist in front if it . There are only 2 windows in the flat. This one and in the bedroom so it’s not possible to get air flowing through.

Other people in the flats have vertical blinds (but I’m not a fan ) but on their own these won’t sort out the freezing winter problem. Has anyone any ideas of anything that would keep the sun/heat out in summer and the heat in in winter?

We have thermal Perfect Fit blinds; they keep heat both out and in pretty well. You won’t be able to get them for the tiny narrow windows, I doubt, but they’ll keep the glare out and prevent heat loss of the large ones. Add heavy curtains if need be for winter.

Thanks. I’ve just looked up those blinds and they look good.

You can get thermal curtains from Dunelm.

Thanks BigusBumus they look fine. It looks like it’s going to be a combination of blinds and curtains to solve both extremes. Not going to be cheap but at least I can now wait till next winter before forking out for curtains.
