Does therapy make things worse

Does therapy make things worse in the beginning sometimes (first couple of months) or can it be a sign that you need to try a different type or different therapist?

Yes it can do. I find it's like decluttering or tidying a particularly messy house - you gotta wade through the shit to begin with and it always looks worse before it gets better.

Always worth it though

It absolutely can do - but a good therapist should manage those expectations and the process though

It depends. Therapy is like any other kind of treatment, it can make things better, make things worse, make no difference, and like you say can also be painful at first but have to be pushed through to get to the part where it makes things better. Sorry, that's not particularly helpful, but you're in a better position than any of us to know if this feels like the wrong therapy or the wrong therapist or the wrong time, or if this is one of those worse-before-it-gets-better things.

Good therapy can make things feel more raw and open temporarily, but the therapist should be able to slow down the pace to something manageable, and give you tools to help manage / control the feelings outside of sessions.

Bad therapy can also make things worse, without the getting better part!

Recommend talking to therapist about it. If they are not sympathetic and completely willing to find a pace that works for you, then move on.

Thanks all. What’s the best way to find a “good” therapist?
