Allergy to black clothing dye?

I was confirmed as allergic to PPD (along with a couple of other things) a few years back, via patch testing from a dermatologist.

I don't remember black clothing being mentioned at the time, although I was definitely warned off hair dye.

I'm currently wondering whether an old (much beloved!) leather jacket of mine is causing a reaction on the sides of my neck, where it would be touched by the collar. I wear it infrequently enough that it's the only thing I can thing of that night have triggered it, given that I'm very careful with washing powder/cosmetics/exposure to other allergens. Does anyone have any experience with this, I guess PPD-allergic people who've found that it isn't just hair dye that sets them off?!

I once had a reaction to bleach and they initially thought it was PPD. They very much warned me that black dye would be a problem if it was.

Well, if leather is brown then it has been dyed, so it seems likely I'm afraid.

Thanks both. I seem to be fine with some black clothes but as I understand it there are different kinds of dyes and AZO dyes are most likely to cause reactions.

I might have to get my lovely jacket on Vinted...

@KendrickLamaze have you had any reactions since? Bleach is pretty much the only hair dye that doesn't seem to give me any trouble 😁

I have had reactions since but only when I paint bleach on my scalp. If I do it once in a blue moon, no problems. If it's monthly then after the second/third time I look like a balloon.

I'm not actually allergic tho according to the tests so...

I am allergic to PPD but haven't had a reaction from black clothing that I'm aware of although many allergens have delayed reactions which makes it much harder to work out. What I do react to is the formaldehyde in brand new clothing, I used to buy second hand clothing as much as possible but unfortunately my fragrance allergy combined with the aggressive use of modern scented laundry products that do not ever wash out has put paid to that as well. So not only do I have to deal with debilitating symptoms whenever I leave the house it's now harder and harder to find basic products and clothing etc I can safely use 🙄Its hard to pin down what I'm reacting to as it seems to evolve frequently but worth trying to keep a note and see if you can narrow down what the issue is because removing allergens as much as possible seems to have slowed down the progression significantly.

Ahhh I sympathise, @Asthmatron3000! Have you looked at Cottonique? Their stuff only seems to be pale colours though. Thought Clothing also seems to be free of AZO dyes, which my recent googling seem to be the more allergenic kind. I'm going to have a little browse for Thought stuff on Vinted. I definitely have some black clothing that doesn't give me trouble though - maybe it's because it's all ancient and well washed?! And I only ever use Fairy non-bio powder, no softener.
