Broken nail (photo)

This might seem like a total non event but it's really painful! Also had no clue where to ask this..

I broke my nail earlier (I don't even have long nails) and it's broken half way down, there was so much blood and it's throbbing. Is there anything g I can do? Should I cut the nail off 🤢 or should I cover it until it grows?

I'm on holiday so have limited resources and it just cost me a fortune for 6 plasters! I do have Savlon..

I'll attach a photo.

Where the blood is is where it's split and it goes half way across 😩

I'd be chucking Superglue on that ... (not a doctor LOL).

The bag of a tea bag with nail glue across the broken bit. You can do a few of layers of it (one at a time) and it should stop the nail lifting.
I’d also cut it as short as possible so you don’t have any but that could get caught on anything.
Looks bloody sore 🤗

My dd did this a few months ago, just use liquid antiseptic and cover until it clots well they try not to knock it, it's taken around 2 months to grow out in her case

During lockdown DH somehow managed to kick me and detached my nail almost completely from the nail bed, it was just hanging by a thread. Nothing I could do but cover it and wait till it fell off.

Thanks everyone! How can something so stupid and small hurt this much, if I was in a cartoon it would be throbbing dramatically and bright red!

I've just sent dh on a glue finding mission but I'm not sure how successful he will be in a hotel and he's not impressed. I'm just going to have to keep it covered and cut it as short as I can like previous poster advised.

I'd never heard of the tea bag trick so I googled it and it sounds genius! Definitely bringing super glue on our next holiday.

I'm so accident prone it's a joke!

That sounds horrific!

I did similar about 3 weeks ago and I taped the nail up using surgical tape (put a small strip vertically over my finger then a second strip wrapped round my finger) and changed the tape regularly. Have also done the same in the past using steristrips if you can get hold of any from a local pharmacy.

Thankfully my nail grew long enough for me to be able to cut it without going through the nail bed

Dh not had any luck with glue but we are going into the local town tomorrow so I'll hopefully find a pharmacy and grab some steri strips, didn't think of that so thank you.

Have you got any nail varnish? if you have some, clear is best. Take a tissue, separate it into one ply. Tear a teeny bit off. Put nail vanish on your nail, then tissue, then varnish. Allow to dry. This will “bandage” the nail. Definitely keep it clean.

Huge potential for infection to get in.

It looks incredibly painful. Ice or cold water on it will help.

JizzlordTheCat · 13/02/2023 20:43

Ouch, that looks very sore.

To be honest, I wouldn’t use glue and risk anything going under the nail-bed and lifting it or causing infection.

I'd just keep it covered until it grows up. Maybe apply disinfectant spray daily and then bandage your nail.

Noonesperfect · 13/02/2023 21:41

Bathe it in hot (obs not tomorrow hot) salt water to help with pain and will also help clean it. Also keep it covered and we'll protected. Poor you, it does look very painful 😟
