Anyone awake that could keep me
calm? Im in hospital with strep A pneumonia and my blood gases aren’t great. Intensive care have been to talk to me about potentially moving there and I’m so scared.

I'm here. Are they talking about increased breathing support in ICU to give you a rest?

C1N1C · 13/02/2023 02:54

I'm up :)... not going to be able to get back to sleep with the dreams I had.

So what happened? How long hs e you been in hospital now?

Lapsedcataholic · 13/02/2023 03:05

Handholding here OP. Do you want to talk about how you ended up there, or about something else altogether?

You're in the right place Flowers

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 13/02/2023 03:21

Hi. ICU has lots more options to treat you. They will explain well what is best for you. Hopefully with a bit more support you’ll soon be feeling much better.

Myusername2015 · 13/02/2023 03:26

Thank you everyone they have to keep taking blood samples from the artery in the wrist it’s so painful I’ve been crying every time stupidly. I just associate intensive care with death

Hand hold, I've had that artery blood test. Holy hell that was painful. 😩
Different reasons but I ended up with sepsis 11 months ago. There is a week I've lost as I was mostly unconscious. I was in Intensive care twice because of the sepsis reoccurring 3 weeks later.
You can get through this. You might not believe it but you can. X

Summer2424 · 13/02/2023 03:35

@Myusername2015 sending you strength to get through this time x

nonsense, no one waste an intensive care bed on someone who is going to die.

Praying for you xx

Myusername2015 · 13/02/2023 03:48

Yes until today when my asthma has sky dived down and my body isn’t expelling enough carbon dioxide. The intensive care outreach doctor has been so kind and explained it’s for extra support which I logically know it is but still feel like I’m going to die and leave my 5 year old. Thanks everyone for your prayers and good wishes

@Myusername2015 you are going to get through this ❤

Lapsedcataholic · 13/02/2023 04:16

It's natural to catastrophise in these kinds of situations OP but of course you're going to be OK, but it must feel very scary right now. Try not to think too far ahead, if you can just think of it as "one foot in front of the other". Everything seems worse in the dark but morning is coming.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 13/02/2023 04:29

Here's another hand hold. I know it feels like an escalation of things if you go into intensive care, but it sounds like you need to give your body a bit of break (you must be exhausted) - and Intensive Care is the place where that can be provided safely and effectively.

Arterial blood gasses are super painful - I really feel for you. Has an arterial line been discussed? If you're having them really regularly that would allow them to take blood without having to stick a needle in you every time.

Azulocean · 13/02/2023 05:02

Each time you are stressed and tense up it can make pain feel worse. Try to put your mind elsewhere while they do the bloods….counting your breathes in, thinking of the alphabet backwards etc. It’s scary (it’s new/different surroundings), so it’s ok to feel nervous that’s normal. Try and put a practical/logical stance to your thinking even if it’s only noticing what pictures are on the wall. Try and name the other patients and then listen out to see if you are right. What colour shoes are people wearing. How many people with glasses? Anything that keeps you in the now, so your thinking can’t run away with you, while your body rests and heals x

@Myusername2015 just checking in, how are you this morning? Hope you managed a bit of sleep!
