Fun car that's not a mid life crisis cliche?

I'd like to treat myself to a new car. I don't need to worry too much about it being practical these days and have been looking at MX5 , Z4 type things, but it is bit cliched for a woman in her 50s?

Any other options in a similar price range?

Honestly, who the hell cares what anyone else thinks if you can afford it and it brings you enjoyment? I love cars so wish I had this problem ha ha.

The most important question I have is what's your budget? And are you definitely after a convertible?

Personally although I know they're great cars I found the MX5 very dull to drive and it didn't do anything for me. Same with a Mercedes SLK. Like the Z4 but the huge front end makes it difficult for me to park. What about an Audi TT? Or if you have the budget and are considering an older car the Honda S2000 is one of the most fun cars I have ever driven.

My friend has a mini countryman on work lease. Really fun car, like it a great deal. Lots of options, convertible if that's what you would like.

WeFollowRivers · 12/02/2023 15:32

Mini Cooper S - go kart, so much fun
My mums Fiat 500 also makes me happy in a more gentle kind of way, it's just a happy place to be

bozzabollix · 12/02/2023 15:35

My key ring for my very aged convertible says ‘midlife crisis’, embrace it!

I bought an incredibly cheap Saab 9-3 convertible years ago whilst I saved for the deposit on the sensible car. Still have it as a third car as we love it so much and it is so cheap to keep going. But you probably have far more budget.

If I had a bigger budget for the midlife crisis car I’d probably go for another BMW but a convertible (the sensible car is a 5 series) or a convertible Audi. Think convertibles should be available on the NHS, I’m going through a rubbish time at the mo so each time there’s a hint of sun the Saab is out and the roof is down.

I bought a Mini Cooper S as my midlife crisis car- so fun!

OhClunge · 12/02/2023 15:35

Get something that makes you smile everyday. I've got a convertible that goes like a rocket
It's brilliant

Whycanineverever · 12/02/2023 15:39

I had an mx5 pre children and I want to buy a midlife crisis car. Probably another mx5. My only issue is parking - only once space on drive and a nightmare area for it.

Needaholidayyesterday · 12/02/2023 15:39

xk was my early midlife crisis car
ostensibly a gift to Dh from me, I take it out when he’s at work just for fun. Sometimes I just drive on any empty country road I can find with Spotify playlist on loud, no purpose to my trip whatsoever. I then have to fill it back up with petrol and buy milk so I had a legit reason 😆

Another vote for mini cooper. Mine has the john cooper works package.

Bluevelvetsofa · 12/02/2023 16:05

I’ve had several mid life crisis cars.
Mini Cooper S convertible
Mazda MX5
Two Audi TT roadsters.

Now I go for comfort, but they were fun.

changer121 · 12/02/2023 16:12

Range Rover Evoque

I adore mine !

Oncemoreforluck · 12/02/2023 16:20

Had two MX 5’s
Currently got an Audi TT
next on list will be a Mini Cooper.

you don’t have to be having a mid life crisis to enjoy fun cars…..just test drive a few and buy the one that makes you smile.

LadySeafish · 12/02/2023 16:23

The MX5 is a lively drive and great gearbox!

I wanted one when my daughter was 2...and promised myself one at 50. Actually bought it at 53! It's 5 years old this year and great fun. Get one before you are too stiff to get in and out!

karmalama · 12/02/2023 16:23

Mini clubman cooper automatic
Love it
Such fun to drive
Can actually get a reasonable amount in the back ad well

IwasToldThereWouldBeCake · 12/02/2023 16:28

I bought a volvo S90.... LOVE IT, very safe, but its huge, so have to be careful parking it, but it feels sooooo safe and smooth and luxurious.

FloydPepper · 12/02/2023 16:28

It’s only men who get accused of having a crisis if they buy a nice car, you can just do what you want, embrace it.

Switchwitch · 12/02/2023 16:30

I'd love an old style mini, done up with lots of chrome.

hattie43 · 12/02/2023 16:31

I'm not into ' age ' cars I just think by what you like . Of all the cars I've had my Porsche Boxster was the most fun . Cannot best a nippy convertible .

hattie43 · 12/02/2023 16:31

Beat

HolibobsinApril · 12/02/2023 16:40

Audi TT - I love mine!

HelpMeGetThrough · 12/02/2023 16:44

In Imola Orange, yes please!!!

Champagneforeveryone · 12/02/2023 17:11

DS bought DM's old Fiat 500 off of her, and I have to say it's one of the funnest little cars I've ever driven (I'm a lifelong 4x4 owner so a real departure from type)

DS's is 14 years old now so I imagine the newer ones are a lot more refined, but if I didn't want a sports car cliche (I completely do!) I would definitely be tempted.

Wombats67 · 12/02/2023 17:15

Vw up gti

Lots of men with supercars also have one. Lots of the v. posh dealers sell them too. Only car I've had random VW technicians wander up at the dealership & say how much they love them. Not a lot to go wrong. Heated seats.

Hoot to drive. Cheap, relatively & fun.
