Amazing hikes

Can anyone recommend a really lovely hike?! It's mine n dh's 10yr wedding anniversary this year. I want to ask mum to mind the kids and go out for a decent length hike. Like we used to do before kids. Points for scenery. Points for a pub. We live in Gloucestershire so points if it's do-able as a day trip or points for an overnight stay in a pub. Cotswolds obviously near by but am more up for something more dramatic. Really appreciate any suggestions!

Bump! I realise it's a bit niche 😂

How far do you want to travel and how lengthy and difficult a hike?

All Trails is a great website / app! You can narrow by location, it gives you a route and you can see people's reviews / photos of it 😊

There’s a good walk at EdgeHill that DH and I do a lot. It’s hard to know what would be amazing to you though and whether that’s also amazing to someone else! We walk a lot and enjoy the peaks, clent, Cannock chase, Forest of Dean, but also lovely flatter walks near Stratford, or Broadway

Cadair Idris in Mid Wales and overnight at the George - both stunning!

And congrats!

I really like the long mynd/carding mill valley in Shropshire. There's a cafe at the car park and pubs in nearby villages but nothing along the way so you'd need a picnic.

I assume you've done the Malverns if you live in Glos?

Agree with PP about Cadair Idris, it's magnificent especially on a clear day.

This looks perfect! Thank you @Blueskyday23

Sorry for crashing your thread OP but I think I've just stumbled on DHs birthday surprise!

Cardingmill Valley and the Long Mynd, as PP said. Stiperstones too.

Reluctantadult · 11/02/2023 20:02

Ah thanks folks!!! These are brilliant. We go to the Forest of Dean and the Malverns with the kids in tow, so thinking something more different for us that we couldn't do with them - they're 8 & 5 and complain about anything more than a couple of miles!

Will defo check out all of these suggestions! That website sounds good.

I've only been up Long Mynd, Carding Mill and the Stiperstones on work days out, so they could be options. We're out of practice so not sure if Cadair Idris would kill us off 🤣 Although it would be brill to blow away some cobwebs!

I loved Lose Hill + Mam Tor walk from Castleton (Peak District).

ichundich · 11/02/2023 20:08

Also the Komoot app is good for walks.

Brecon Beacons horseshoe ridge and a night at the Felin Fach Griffin Smile congrats on your anniversary!

I think the best hikes are in the Lake District or Yorkshire but I am a bit biased.
