Name change

I've always wondered why people name change in the middle of a thread. It makes it difficult to filter so I can read all OP posts before commenting.
Please would people tell me why posters change their names in the middle of a thread?
Also why sometimes do OP change names and then change back to the original name with no commentary on why they keep switching.

Usually because they're trolls who are sock-puppeting themselves. They don't intend to and get hoist by their own petard.

Sometimes people have more than one username and forget which one they posted with. Sometimes the difference between the usernames is minimal, perhaps one letter or digit.

When people post and then really soon (within the hour let's say) post something else with a different name does that mean they went into their settings and changed their name? And then later in the day go back and change it again? Or can people have different accounts? I only have one account. I change my name sometimes and then never go back to an old name.

It can be accidental - if my default name is "cloud9isnowclosed" but I want to post a thread under another of my names "cloud9isstillopen" - my OP may be in latter name but because I've not switched latter name to default name then "cloud9isnowclosed" will still show up as default name in subsequent posts and I'd have to change each post on thread - and I may forget and just post a reply without changing

Often they've name changed for a particular thread, for privacy, but then used one of their other names by mistake.

Ooohhhhh. That's a good explanation. I didn't realise there were 'default' names. I thought you had a name that you could change but then that became your name. I didn't realise there was a default name you reverted to. Thanks for explaining.
