Uplifting books, podcasts, TV shows anyone?

Perhaps like many of you, I feel completely beaten down by the news right now. Try to avoid it as much as possible but hard to avoid visuals of the dead in Turkey. Also have Covid again, so feeling low.

Seeking reccos for uplifting, life affirming content. Not anything spiritual or religious or woo please. Also not keen on all the Instagram type #blessedgratitude content. But any other reccos welcomed.

I should add that so many tv shows and books these days appear to be secretly about murdered women and I am sick of reading about murdered women.

What about radio shows? I listen to lots of old school panel shows on radio 4 - just a minute, I’m sorry I haven’t a clue and the newsquiz makes me cry with laughter.

The Hairy Bikers have a really nice podcast. I think it's called Agony Uncles. It's so much fun listening to it, they are such nice human beings, with such good chemistry and humour.

And when things get really bad then I watch animal videos on The Dodo.

Grace and Frankie!

Waterfallgirl · 11/02/2023 00:09

Great News on netflix is good . (There’s alot going on below the seemingly silly comedy!)
Grace and Frankie easy watch and two great actresses.

I always watch Dinnerladies when I need a pick me up away from all the bad news!

Lentilweaver · 11/02/2023 00:11

I love Grace and Frankie. Also seen some of the other picks, but not others. Keep them coming. Thank you!

The Apprentice has got me raging these days rather than laughing:)

Random but I'll recommend them

YouTube of her daily life. She never speaks, and it's the most soothing thing I watch!

Tiny house YouTube

Double cleanse podcast

The Welsh twins on YouTube. Separately they are a skincare and a makeup YouTuber, together utter chaos. I laughed so hard I cried at one of the videos

I'm feeling like this too these days. Things I've been going back to are lovely old tv shows like Dinnerladies and The Good Life and the marvellous radio show Cabin Pressure - it's written by John Fennimore, and stars him, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephanie Cole and Roger Allam. I don't know how many hundreds of times I've listened to the episodes but it's just the best thing ever.

Lighthearted podcasts I enjoy -

Happier with Gretchen Rubin - sort of daily life tips and tricks and philosophy, general chit chat. She hosts with her sister and their relationship is just lovely.

By the Book - two women live by popular self-help books for 2 weeks at a time, following the advice to the letter. Can be very funny!

TV -

Schitts Creek
Modern Family
Marvellous Mrs Maisel
Heartstopper
Shrinking (just started this, on Apple TV)
Derry Girls

and I love reality home shows where they transform people’s living when I’m ill, so stuff like Your Home Made Perfect, Marie Kondo on Netflix, Stacey Solomon I cluttering show, a US insane DIY SOS in a day thing (also Netflix, it’s name escapes me) - all that sort of stuff.
