Dumb question alert

If an application closes at midnight on 10 February would you think:

10 February at 23:59 is the latest you can submit?

OR

9 February at 23:59 is the latest you can submit - so as soon as the clock hits midnight it’s 10 February and the application is closed.

At the end of 10th February.

Midnight of the 10th so technically 23:59:59.

You can't have a midnight of a previous day.

This is not a dumb question and it always a divide.

I'm autistic so midnight on the 10th can only ever mean midnight on the 10th, which is right after 11:59 on the 9th. I appreciate it makes much more sense for it to be the end of the 10th, not the start though.

Perhaps midnight should never be a deadline - let's campaign for 11pm Smile

My DH is job hunting and last night around 11pm we were looking. I sent him a link and he says he’s too tired to fill in the very lengthy form. The closing date said 10/02 at midnight. I said do it tomorrow when you wake up and so a debate was started. He explained and defended his stance so well that it made sense so I doubted myself 😂

Anyway the application link is still open...

Ooh tricky one.

TBH, if it was last night, he'd have been lucky to get it through on time anyway if he'd needed to write a personal statement or write detailed person spec responses.

A job I recently applied for got round this by stating that the application had to be submitted by 23.55 on X date. I did think that was quite random, but this thread explains why.

But this is something lots of people struggle with, and I think it's fairly common for people to miss planes or arrive 24 hours too late for job shifts etc, because, in their minds, if the time is Friday 10th February at 1 am, it's at the end of Friday, not at the beginning.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/02/2023 12:14

Makes more sense for it to be tonight as it coincides with the end of the working week.

Is he planning to spend his Friday evening applying for the job OP?

TBH, if it was last night, he'd have been lucky to get it through on time anyway

That’s why I confused when he said he was too tired to fill it in but turned out he thought it needed to be sent by 23:59 last night. He had been compiling a list of jobs to apply for and as he is off today was going to spend a few hours working on that.
