Ok sorry not very exciting
I have a smell coming from my washing machine, have tried to clean it out and use a washing machine disinfect wash in it but still smells.
Could it be the drains and any idea how to try and sort ?
Thanks

Do you use laundry liquid or powder?
What washing temperatures do you wash at?

TeamadIshbel · 10/02/2023 10:42

Run empty wash with some bleach in machine.

I find that the small bottle of detol washing machine cleaner works a treat. But the trick is to always leave the doors and detergent drawer open to fully dry after each use.

Also does your washing machine have a self clean setting ? I use that when I put the detol in.

Finally make sure you clean the filter regularly.

Do an empty hot wash with biological powder to clear the smell. Try leaving the door ajar when not in use to let it air.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/02/2023 10:45

Do a 90 deg empty ‘wash’ with just a cupful of soda crystals, no detergent. You may be amazed at the amount of dirty looking foam that appears. I was - I did it twice before it was looking clean.

If you’re using those gel pods, change to powder, they gum up the machine with gunge. Fabric conditioner does much the same.

PixiePirate · 10/02/2023 10:47

Did you remove and clean out the drawer as well as the drum?

stbrandonsboat · 10/02/2023 11:03

Put some white vinegar in the conditioner drawer to go through in the conditioner cycle.

Switch to powder for a bit. If that’s the issue you’ll notice the difference after just one or two washes.

amylou8 · 10/02/2023 11:25

Run it empty hot with bleech, then run it empty again with washing detergent to make sure there's no bleech residue. Leave the door open between washes. Mine often gets smelly because dd can't grasp not leaving her washing festering after it's finished.

MaggieMagpie357 · 10/02/2023 11:32

Definitely clean the drawer and also the filter at the bottom, usually a pipe behind a small door which you drain.

I always leave the door ajar when it's not being used as well.

Dettol always works for me with dirty a washing machine, drains, dog towels, bathroom floors and sports clothes.

Dobbyatemysocks · 10/02/2023 11:42

Take a good handful of bicarbonate soda and throw it into the drum. Then add about 1/2 a mug of white vinegar.

Run it on a normal program and that should fix it.

I had to do this when my DP left his washing inside for two days whilst I was away.

Word of warning: your washing machine will look like it might explode when you look because it will fill with loads of bubbles (first time I did it I used a mug of both vinegar and soda) and I panicked - now I use half that amount once a month and it works a treat.

Good luck.

gamerchick · 10/02/2023 11:45

Bung in a couple of old towels, chuck half a packet of Epsom salts straight into the drum and put it on a hot wash.

You do need to alternate between liquids and powders though to keep it right.

I’ve just moved into a rental and although the washing machine didn’t look knackered it smelt. There was some left over washing machine cleaner lying around so I used that. Smell still there.

I got down on my hands and knees and checked all around the rubber seal and where the seal meets the metal drum.

There was black slime and sludge. I am a bit anal and spent a couple of hours with a toothbrush and zoflora getting rid of it. I think if I’d had a steamer it would have been easier.

The smell has gone. I then had to do the same with the dish washer.

Floralnomad · 10/02/2023 11:57

When you say you’ve cleaned it have you had the drawer out and cleaned underneath it and thoroughly done all the seals , in between the seals as that is where gunge tends to build up .

Thanks so much for the help just realised there is a clean option on the machine Blush trying this with bleach.
