Night sweats

Spoke to the GP today after having bloods done including hormones as I've been suffering from drenching night sweats for two weeks out of every month for about a year. No weight loss or any other sinister symptoms. The GP is pretty baffled and has requested a further set of hormone tests in 6 weeks.
Has anyone else had fortnightly night sweats that haven't either been cancer or menopause related?
I'm 41 btw so it'd be fairly unusual for menopause although not unheard of and I'm glad she's testing my hormones. All other bloods were in her words "perfect" including vitamins and thyroid.

I had horrendous night sweats when my anxiety was bad a couple of years. Full on getting up and changing sheets. Never experienced anything like it before or since.

yours seem to have more of a pattern though so probably not anxiety. Hope you get answers soon.

PieonaBarm · 09/02/2023 21:41

I get them the week before I'm due my period and often the week of it, are yours a similar pattern?

GoodVibesHere · 09/02/2023 21:47

Yes, me. I had two years of it. Blood tests were all 'normal', I never found out what caused it, but personally I am assuming peri-menopause.

My night sweats started when I was 44, I am now 47 and haven't had night sweats for about 9 months. I still have regular periods. I must be in peri-menopause because nothing else explains waking up soaked through and freezing cold from being in wet pyjamas. I 'coped' by wearing thin nighties made with 100% cotton which I would change at least once but often twice a night, and frequently had to strip the bedding off in the middle of the night as it was soaked. I moved to the spare bedroom because of it.

My other 'symptoms' were very dry skin, anxiety and brain fog. The brain fog/inability to concentrate was partly due to broken sleep. Bloody horrendous.

Me. Awful drenching the bed at a similar age. I was told it wasn’t menopause as I was on the pill. Never found a reason and it passed. Weird.
Sugar made it worse!

Rubyupbeat · 09/02/2023 21:50

I expect they would have tested you for diabetes and b12 deficiency , as these aldo cause night sweats. I never know which is causing mine.
I change bedding every 2 days as the sheets would smell if left any longer.....oh the Joy's!

NeedWineNow · 09/02/2023 21:53

I'm 8 years post menopause. I didn't get night sweats until I had my Covid vaccine and boosters. They've just carried on. I mentioned it to the doctor and had a blood test last year which was clear. I haven't had the drenching ones that a lot of people have though. More like a mild hot flush. And not every night.

Clarabe1 · 09/02/2023 21:56

I am 50 now but I started with night sweats probably 10 years ago. I would have 2 weeks sweat free and then the week before and sometimes during my period I was suffering terrible night sweats . I had no other perimenopause symptoms at the time but it must have been the start of my hormones changing.

SlB09 · 09/02/2023 22:00

I get them during ovulation and sometimes all the way to my period (in 39 & have done for the past few years).
I even get daytime flare ups if I drink hot drinks for instance or just whizzing around at work but never in the first few weeks of cycle.

SlB09 · 09/02/2023 22:01

If she's baffled your GP could ask for advice and guidance from gyneacologiatbifnfelt hormonal

TetherEndOfMy · 09/02/2023 22:03

I started having awful night sweats in my late 20s. GP couldn't find anything wrong. Had them for about 2 years and they disappeared. Never found an explanation.

WorriedMillie · 09/02/2023 22:05

Mine were caused by a severe B12 deficiency (I’d had a FBC, but B12 wasn’t included)

Clingfilm · 09/02/2023 22:11

Yep, same, had tests, no cause, nothing sinister. I assumed it was age related but periods etc are fine. I used to sleep on a towel at one point so I could whip it away and my nightie off when I woke up soaking.

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 09/02/2023 22:42

I’m early 40’s and get them for a few days on my period.
bed soaked and sweat literally running off me in beads.

What?

AnotherSpare · 09/02/2023 22:49

Peri menopause! Night sweats were the first peri menopause symptom I had when I was 40. My blood tests showed nothing. Over the next six years other symptoms crept in.
I would wake up literally dripping wet, most night, for half of my monthly cycle. Such an awful thing to experience!
I avoid memory foam mattresses and stick to springs to help air flow through. And I find sleeping naked helps my body regulate it's own temperature better.

MeinKraft · 09/02/2023 22:52

Late 30s and in the second two weeks of my cycle I have to pee constantly. If anyone else has experience of this and know why please let me know because I'm baffled! I'm on sertraline for anxiety manifesting as irritability/anger which I'm now wondering is it hormonal. And I've had a couple of night sweats now too, all pointing one direction isn't it?

MeinKraft · 09/02/2023 22:53

Sorry to answer your actual question instead of just talking about myself - I'm not sure the blood tests for menopause are all that reliable

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 09/02/2023 22:53

My doc just brushed me off so no idea what causes mine. I'm still having regular periods and bloods showed I'm still fertile.

An allergies consultant is going to do a full thyroid test soon. I feel I'm pre-diabetic but my hba1c is 41 so the gp is happy with that

Sexypyjamas · 09/02/2023 22:56

I get them when I'm poorly with a virus so definitely drenched the bed with covid when I had it.
Also sweat at night when recovering from blood loss after child birth (pph).
Hope you find out what's causing it x

FizzyStream · 11/02/2023 20:04

Thanks all for the replies! Completely forgot I started the thread Blush
In answer to some questions, yes vitamin B12 and HbA1c (diabetes) were checked and normal. I'm still convinced it's peri even though she said my hormones were normal as it's in a two weekly cycle. On speaking to my mum she said she had tests around age 48 and was found to be well into menopause at that age so it's certainly possible I'm revving up for it. Joy.
Currently in the no sweating fortnight so enjoying not waking up wet and freezing. Interesting a pp said about sugar making it worse. That's a possibility so I'll keep an eye on that.
