Hate my handwriting

As stated in the title, I hate my handwriting. Thinking back to primary school I was conscious my handwriting wasn’t that great and I always tried changing it but it never worked. Secondary school and college I didn’t mind it so much but as I got older and started working and sending Christmas, birthday cards and filling in forms I became very aware of it again. When I am faced with a form or have sign something the fear and anxiety it brings is terrible. I have tried buying numerous books etc but nothing has helped. Any advice welcome! Should I just accept it at this stage in my life?

Thank you guys for all the replies. Over the years I have bought mss as many adult handwriting books, pens, writing slow, fast, different paper etc nothing seems to help. I’ve worked with a lot of people over the years and everyone seems to have lovely handwriting style. I’d love to know more about the psychology of handwriting, I’m starting to think it could be a form of dyslexia.

What do you specifically dislike about your handwriting?
Does it look like a young child's handwriting? Does it lean to the left or right, iris it upright? Is it not particularly elegant, or are the letters not uniform?

My handwriting is ok on a good day, but someone who analysed handwriting as a hobby said I had certain types of character traits and it showed in my handwriting.

My handwriting is very similar to my mother's, but she didn't teach me to write.
Many, but not all, of my fellow primary school pupils have similar handwriting to each other, because we were taught to write cursive handwriting.

this is a thread I started about the same kind of thing last month. I copied a passage from a magazine and write it 3 times every day, using 2 different pens and a pencil. It’s amazing the difference it’s making, just really taking my time and concentrating on how I form the letters, rather than going at a million miles an hour.

My writing is better if I use a fountain pen. I have a cheap one. Perhaps a very good fountain pen would be a step better for me.🙂
I find the height of a desk and a chair to be very important. I do my best writing when I have the lap cushion on my lap and I am over the writing - you know, one of those things which is a flat piece of board with cushion attached underneath, but without tray sides. A friend said that she just uses a piece of wood or similar, on her knee, and I have a piece like that in another room.
Would that make any difference?
(I knew a teacher who said that children will do good writing if you give them good paper to write on, and scruffier writing if you give them scruffy paper.)

I make notes on different subjects jn my knowledge journal and that has helped improve my handwriting, it's still not the best but it has helped. I prefer writing as its easy to print to much information where as if I'm reading and writing then it helps me learn it too

Have you tried using a triangular barrel? I really like using these Schneider pens, they are less tiring to hold than round/octagonal pens. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006FD7GA8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&th=1

I find that I don't need to really write very much these days, but when I fill in a form I use all caps whenever possible or block letters. I never to joined up writing.

It slants to the right, small and I suppose the letters are not uniform. I think I’m very heavy on the pen also . When I’m writing numbers they are definitely not uniform. I really struggle writing the letter d it’s more like an L. It’s very male like writing not feminine- it that makes sense.

Oh my handwriting is also awful! I am left handed too so always smudge things. My hand also has a mind of its own and has a habit of writing random letters in the wrong place? So I’ll add a random ‘d’ on the end of someone’s name or something, even though I’m not even thinking ‘d’! Means I’m constantly scribbling out mistakes along side the awful writing. Anyway you’re not alone. I dont really worry about forms..birthday/Xmas cards for people I don’t know too well, I get DH to write!

DillDanding · 10/02/2023 19:16

I am so weird about writing. I only write with a particular pen. I love them so much, I buy them by the box.

I genuinely love writing. And lovely notebooks to fill with my lovely writing 😂

I also add random letters to words, it’s like my hand keeps moving when it’s suppose to stop.

Do you mind sharing what kind of pen you use? I’m a sucker for all things stationery!

Oh yes! I do this too. It’s so frustrating. I watch my hand do it and am unable to stop it.

Anyway, I was going to suggest taking an art class. Specifically a drawing or illustration class. It’s a game changer. Really changes the old learned processes that interfere with how you make marks on paper. There are good online ones. I recommend www.instagram.com/thegoodshipillustration/ who are live 8pm on Fridays. Really fun interesting things like drawing with twigs, or with your non dominant hand etc.

I had beautiful handwriting then I got Parkinson’s and it became a scrawl and I can’t write for any length of time. I sometimes see a file that I worked on in the office archives and think ‘ah, look at my writing there!’ Then occasionally when I’m not expecting it I’ll write something down and it will look half decent partly due to my medication and partly because I’m not overthinking. I love it when that happens.
