What are some things that an Apple Watch can do?

Recently been gifted an Apple Watch.

Hit me up with some of the best features. Apart from telling the time and receiving messages I know nothing about it!

For example if I went out for a run would it play music to my wireless headphones or do I need to take my phone too?

Thanks

Love mine. Measures work outs, can use it to pay for things. Saved my bacon when I had accidentally licked my self out of the house and then the cat. And phone was in the car. Phoned my dad and asked him to text insurance company bumbler and managed to arrange a locksmith , all from my watch. Not sure about music Storage though.

OntarioBagnet · 08/02/2023 10:51

Being able to pay for stuff on your watch.

Catsonskis · 08/02/2023 10:51

Yeah you can use it to play music I think.

I use it mostly to track my activity like running and various gym classes, setting timers when cooking, reminding me to drink water etc

StillWantingADog · 08/02/2023 10:54

Not sure about music actually- think not with mine but it’s a s3 which is fairly ancient.
when somebody calls me I can answer using my watch which is very useful if I can’t find my phone! Also I can ask the watch to ping my phone to help me find it. Notifications on your wrist is great. In theory it helps you be less attached to your phone.

I like the camera feature I set up the camera on the iphone and take photos using the watch to take the photo. Great getting photos of DH and I together.
I also use the heart features to monitor my heart rate.
I also like that I can use it to locate my phone as I can never find it in my bag or in the house

Helps me find my phone if I've lost it. Don't have to pull my phone out of my pocket to answer calls, see/ignore notifications on whatsapp or emails, pause music/podcasts.

Shows me the weather, temperature, and how far along I am in calories burned, minutes of exercise and reminds me to stand up if I've been sitting for a long time. Can sense what stroke I'm swimming, whether I'm running or swimming, measures steps and heart rate while I'm on the bike. Links to the peloton.

I can ask siri to search anything (usually "what is 375f in c" or "how much is one stick of butter in grams") or set a timer while my hands are messy while cooking or baking.

I can go for a walk or run without my phone and listen to downloaded music or podcasts, but only via the Apple Music or Apple Podcasts app - if I want to listen via spotify I can control it via my watch, so don't have to pull the phone out of my pocket but I can't download spotify music to the watch and leave the phone behind completely.

Oh yeah remote camera control! You can make sure you're in the shot before you take it as well.

I get alerts from Amazon with time of arrival when a parcel is on its way as well.

Aposterhasnoname · 08/02/2023 11:14

Walkie talkie function if you have someone else with one.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 08/02/2023 11:19

I don't use mine to track my runs but I use it to listen to audio books on long runs as I much prefer audible to Spotify books.

I just take the straps off and stick it in my leggings pocket.

It pays for stuff, tracks steps, heart rate, sleep etc etc. I deleted walkie talkie app as my work colleagues kept annoying me with it 😂

lovedive · 08/02/2023 11:22

Mine detects if I've had a fall and then calls emergency services if I don't respond to its alert. Very very useful if you're disabled like myself

noblegiraffe · 08/02/2023 11:23

Finding your phone is the best use, it dings even if it’s on silent.

I ask Siri stuff on it all the time, like calculations, or how tall is Tom Cruise. It can also do ‘how long to get home from here’ which tells you what the traffic is like.

It can do directions, buzzing when you need to turn left etc.

The torch on it looks shit, but surprisingly handy.

You can also use it to tap and pay for things in shops.

The exercise stuff is really good for motivation.

I’ve got the weather on my face screen which is handy for highest/lowest temperature and rain warnings.

I love my Apple Watch! I ping my phone from it about ten times a day as I'm always losing my phone, I have an Airtag on my keys so I can also find my keys and my children's phones.

Paying for things (plus getting into my gym) can now be done from my watch- if you add cards to your watch make sure that you add a PIN to your watch so that if you take it off it needs a PIN after you put it on again.

We have an electric car so I can preheat my car from my watch on a cold morning so I don't need to go out and scrape. And when it's hot I'll be able to pre-cool it. Plus I can see where the car is if I've parked it somewhere and forgotten, then get walking directions to it.

I use it a lot to track my walks and bike rides, plus keep an eye on my general health and fitness. You can add medication tracking or period tracking if that's relevant to you.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/02/2023 11:27

There's a torch?! Oh how marvellous! I'll check that out!

Paying with your watch is really handy and makes me feel almost cool.

Pinging phone when it's lost

I can go running without my phone

It reminds me to drink water, and keep moving every hour.

I can use it at night to pause / rewind / stop my podcast without picking up the phone

I have different faces for day and night that I can just scroll through. Big numbers so I can tell the time without my glasses in the night. More widgets on the screen for the daytime face.

Thanks everyone - really appreciate these ideas!

Some more questions!

Is it waterproof? I noticed someone uses it for swimming so I'm assuming so

Does anyone use it to track sleep? If so, when do you charge it?

StillWantingADog · 08/02/2023 14:08

Def waterproof. It definitely thinks it’s swim friendly though mine has only been out in the rain so far

OntarioBagnet · 08/02/2023 14:45

How does the camera thing work?

Magenta65 · 08/02/2023 14:48

You can download music or audiobooks etc to your Apple Watch so no need for you phone but would be pretty useless otherwise if you don’t have the 4g version. Mine used my phone for internet connection

How does the camera thing work?

You set the camera up on your phone reverse your camera, open the camera icon on your watch and press the button and it counts down from three before it takes the photo.
