Turning off from the news

Iamatissuebox · 08/02/2023 09:35

I’ve just an opened my browser at work and the automatic news page showing a photo of a Turkish man sitting in the rubble holding the hand of his dead daughter. I’m now in tears in the toilet. I can’t unsee it.

I know earthquakes are hardly new. But I can’t cope anymore with the horrible, heartbreaking news out there anymore. The recent missing persons, murder suicide, not to mention politics, there seems so little hope in the media…has anyone else completely disconnected from the news outlets? Is it possible to avoid? I’m going to start now by changing my web browser and settings so I choose when I view it

That image will stay with me forever.

I always tell me children 'look for the helpers'. When you start looking at the sheer amount of people trying to help it makes me feel a bit better about the world. It's still absolutely awful but if there weren't that many people risking their own lives to help it would be a lot worse x

I tried to stop watching news during covid I found it too depressing.

Just turn it off for a month.

You still find out things. Social media , people chatting etc.

But trust me you will feel so much calmer

I agree. The relentlessness of it is anxiety inducing. You can look at the headlines etc and still know what is going on, without immersing yourself.

I totally agree that it's depressing to read the news. I spend 10 minutes having a quick look through the headlines on the BBC web site and that's me done for news for the day (and some days, I don't even do that). Beyond that, I couldn't cope with the emotional onslaught every day.
