Phone interview

I have my first phone interview tomorrow in 10 years! I have worked in my current position that whole time but have progressed as much as I can. The structure in my department is 2 managers and then different grades for all other employees. I have worked my way up to the top grade. The reason I want to leave is because I do want to progress to management. The 2 managers at my company are not going anywhere anytime soon. One has been there 30 years and the other 25years.
I know I am overqualified for the role I have applied for but there are a lot more opportunities to progress at this company and I'm not actually in any rush. I still enjoy my role but would eventually like more.
I'm guessing I will be asked why I want to work there and the reason for leaving my current job. What is the best way to answer? Just the truth?

I would just answer truthfully that you’ve reached the progression ceiling in your current role and that’s something that’s really important to you in whatever company/role you move into. Then turn the question on them and ask if that sounds like something they could offer.

I would say exactly what you've said here. I think you can sell yourself as someone coming in at a lower grade than you are qualified for and how you bring good value for money. And emphasise you are keen to grow and develop professionally.

I applied for a similar lower grade than I was qualified for position last year. I got it and they re-graded the role to meet the grade I wanted to be at and offered to pay me significantly more than the originally advertised salary. So it's very worth doing if it's the right position.
