Bug in bed … Help!

Hello,

Does anyone know what this bug shell could be? I’m desperately hoping it’s not a bed bug, but I must admit it is segmented like one. But it’s more oval than other pictures I’ve seen. It appears dark both ends with a lighter coloured middle. It was on the mattress. I can’t see any further indications like black or red spots on the mattress or further bugs etc. Dh upstairs furiously hoovering whatever it is. Any ideas? Thanks!

Is it a carpet beetle? If so they're not that bad, but they do eat soft furnishings

i can’t judge it’s size by the pic but it looks like a slater? If so, nothing to worry about

Just a random beastie that's found its way into your bedroom. Don't tell husband that yet, wait till he's finished.

Give the mattress a good hoover both sides, and the sides, then if possible hoover under bed, also give the whole room a good hoover move furniture if you can . That should sort the problem. Basically give the bedroom a really good spring clean and declutter.

It is very small, those dots are like pin pricks in the mattress. I think as someone said up thread maybe a carpet beetle… wondering if it is the dried larva stage. Everyone has at least put my mind at rest. I’ve been nervous of bed bugs ever since my student travelling days and checking hostel mattresses for signs! I wouldn’t even know how bed bugs would get to us nowadays.

Carpet beetle would be my suggestion too.

bigbillybobhowler · 07/02/2023 17:37

Definitely not a bed bug, it's a carpet beetle larvae.

Thanks everyone, very helpful, phew! Going to have a good clean up anyway but at least don’t have to go to sleep worrying about what might be lurking!

I'd guess carpet beetle. Drove me mad when I found them under my son's relatively new bed mattress. I then discovered they come in through my windows (old house) when weather warms up. I have had a bad back periodically and hadn't been able to move his bed/furniture to hoover and found them in his sock drawer too. You really need to get in every crevice to hoover up the larvae. Also put down diamateous earth which helps. They are an absolute pain and to the naked eye you could miss them for ever when in carpets.

lovemypuppa · 07/02/2023 18:05

Your pic looks like the larvae, not the beetle

Knoblauch · 07/02/2023 18:08

It looks like an upside down wood louse to me

rockpoolingtogether · 07/02/2023 21:22

It is definitely a carpet beetle. There will be more. Check around the edge of your carpet and places hidden by furniture
