I'm hoping I can get some insight please as I really haven't travelled much and I have zero experience of this sort of thing.

I'm looking to move from Shenfield, Essex, ideally not too far, but far enough to be able to afford a 4/(5?) bed detached house with large garden/outside space, in a friendly area with good schools, transport links, and plenty of open spaces for walking our dogs and recreation for my 3 DC: 5, 9 and 18.
I also need to access supermarkets etc within a reasonably short drive.

Maximum drive of 1.5 hours from Shenfield but preferably much closer.

Distance is a consideration as my DC and I would like to keep contact with special friends we have nearby. (Family are abroad so no ties there).
Crucially, my ex DP has our DC half of school holidays and 2 weekends a month.
He is in Borehamwood, current commute 45-70 minutes to collect the children. (An increase is ok but would ideally like to keep a cap on it).

The areas I've looked at online so far are norfolk &Lincolnshire (cheap but maximum distance, any towns here to avoid or consider?) and Suffolk, but ideas closer to home or recommendations will be much appreciated.

Budget £400k but could push a little higher for the right area.

Thanks!

Maldon?

Is there much to do for older children and choices of good schools? I actually think Maldon sounds like a lovely place but quite limiting for bus travel to school etc?
