Part time work - half days or fewer full days?

Which do / would you prefer and why please?

I think I'd rather do fewer full days, as then I'd have time to do other things on days off whereas half days eat into your day and to you end up just waiting to go to work

But, we also have primary age DCs and we would save some money if they didn't need to go to ASC?

I’m part time and do 2 12 hour shifts then have the other 3 days off.

Saves in petrol and parking as well as not having to think about work for those days!

Think about the school holidays to. Half days would mean you'd need holiday care every day. Although on the other hand sometimes the holiday camps are school hours anyway so that can be useful. But it does mean you don't get days to do stuff with the kids unless you take annual leave.

What about INSET days?

plumduck · 05/02/2023 12:13

Think about school holidays.

I personally like having shorter days though

I do fewer full days, for exactly the reason you've said.

Thanks all. I did think about school holidays but then remembered the holiday club DC has done in the past have been half days only 🤔. They didn't do lunchtime, so you booked either the morning or afternoon session.

Inset days true are usually on a Monday or Friday so I could avoid working on those days if is did fewer full days

Depends on work culture, I’d say fewer days or whatever the other part timers do so there’s less risk of being expected to do a days work in half a day. Obviously that doesn’t apply to all types of work though.

I'm part time at the moment I do 3 full days Mon to Weds
This works well as children all at school now and it makes holiday childcare much easier and in the nursery days we only had to pay for 3 days
But the three days I do work are manic
Mondays I come in to anything left on the days I wasn't in on top of all my new work. Tuesdays are a bit calmer then Wednesdays are spent manically trying to do advance work so as little as possible is left
We are really busy at the moment and it's meant I've been doing half days of OT on a Thursday and a Friday and honestly it has made my life so much easier and I haven't been playing catch up all week
But if I went to 5 days it'd be 5 days childcare in the holidays

I don't work on Mondays, which is great re inset days and bank holidays (I then get the pro rata AL to use on a day of my choice).

I did half days Mon-Fri. I had DC at primary school so was up and out every day anyway so didn't get the lazy mornings if I had been off work.

I am a teacher so didn't have to think about holidays so can't help with that.

I liked it because it allowed me to take control of particular subjects so didn't have to hand over to anyone else for the rest of the week - this was a big positive for me. I also loved having shorter days - it felt like I was barely in and I could pick up my own DC after school every day.
