Help - driving license query

Wasn't sure where to post this so settled on chat.

My provisional license expires in 2020. I now want to start lessons so obviously need to renew it, however I got married last year. I know to change my name I need to fill in a paper form, which is free, but I'm wondering whether I'm allowed to do this when my license has expired as I know there's a cost associated with a simple renewal.

I've googled but can't find the answer I'm looking for, so hoping someone who has been in the same situation can advise.

Have you tried to go through the application form? It should just ask previous names known by. As long as your Passport for your id document is in your married name it should then just be a renewal but then issued in your new name.

I’d say the name change form is if you already have a license and are changing your details.

They are different forms - the name change one is paper only. Think I'm going to have to renew it in my maiden name then apply for another new one with my name change!

You definitely don’t need to do this, you just need to do the renewal form providing your current name, along with confirmation of previous name. They may ask for evidence to support the name change as part of the renewal process.
