I started properly feeding the garden birds this winter. Don’t often see them as I’m working.

This week I’ve been off so I’ve been able to watch them. I normally put the food out before bed as they are really active at Dawn. It was drizzly last night so I put it out this morning.

well, it was like a scene from Snow White! There were robins, wrens. Blue tits and blackbirds sat around the fence waiting! As I was putting out the food, the robins were just right there.

absolutely joyful.

Ah that’s lovely @BrewandBiscuit
Did you go outside with a cuppa and see the dawn?

dudsville · 04/02/2023 08:14

Your post gave me a big smile OP! We have feeders out. Love watching them. We also happened to put some soil out for other reasons last week and tones of birds did a dirt bath!

I get crows and magpies. I love watching them with my cat. They have no fear of us.

I have 2 Robins, 2 Blue Tits and 2 Great Tits that make good use of my feeders. Two Wood Pigeons sit and wait for scraps.

Occasional visitors are Collared Doves, a Jay, Dunnocks and a Tree Sparrow - all these will become more regular as Spring really starts.

I love it when the Blackbirds find my (town centre, surrounded by building work) garden - their song makes my heart sing.

You have warmed my soul with this post, thank you!

PureGrit · 04/02/2023 08:54

That’s really lovely. I used to get a robin visitor who would come and eat out of my hand. I’d been putting food out for weeks and he got so used to seeing that that he started to come closer and closer. So one day, I put some food in my hand, gently moved it in his direction and he jumped on it!

If you have a friendly robin and want to give it a try, a mix with fat sprinkles or mealworms is pretty irresistible to them 😊

ChrisPPancake · 04/02/2023 08:56

Lovely post!
I'm looking forward to late spring when our swift family comes back.

squashyhat · 04/02/2023 09:13

Besides the usual suspects we get Pied Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, Coal Tits and the occasional Goldfinch. And flocks of tiny Long Tailed Tits in the summer.

Defiantlynot41 · 04/02/2023 09:16

Oh, thank you for posting and reminding me of the joys of feeding the birds. We have loads although it's a constant battle with the crows to stop them taking the whole thing! I don't mind them having some of the feed but going off with the whole coconut so there's nothing for the little birds is bad.

In the summer we get house martins nesting in the eaves. I absolutely love to hear their scribble little chatter as the set off

AtomicBlondeRose · 04/02/2023 09:17

I live in a bungalow and we have bird feeders in the big bush outside our bedroom window so we can lie in bed and watch them at the weekend. It’s lovely, apart from when the great oafs of pigeons swoop down and scare everyone off!
