I can't get chloramphenicol eye drops / ointment

I've phoned round most pharmacies in my local area and the ones that have spoken to me don't have any in stocks and I can't seem to find any in stocks anywhere online either.

I have conjunctivitis my eyes are burning and itching so much. Does anyone have any recommendations for other drops that may work?

I know I can Google but its recommending drops I've already used to no avail I'm hoping some clever mumsnetter has some magic potion they can recommend

I recently (this month) got 1% chloramphenicol eye ointment from my chemist without any problems (I’m in Scotland) but have not been able to get antibiotic eye drops which I have used previously and would prefer to the ointment.

Golden eye ointment has a website

I saw the ebay ones and I wasn't sure if it was a good thing to buy an OTC medicine from ebay.
Then again I am getting desperate!

I buy it from eBay and it's been fine.

Rowthe · 31/01/2023 10:51

Weird.

That's a really common medication.

The only thing I can reccomend is to ring round different chemists, and also see if they have any available to buy, cos its available to buy over the counter too.

If you look the first one is an actual chemist so it’s fine to buy from them on eBay.

I also buy stuff from American chemists that post to the U.K. as they have different stuff to us.

There's a shortage. Probably due to a lot of illness this year. Several pharmacists told us.

We had to drive around for 2 hours to get some last week. But finally got it from a hospital chemist. Most places were restricting giving it out without a prescription.

Are you sure it's not viral conjunctivitis?

I have suffered hugely with conjunctivitis in the past. An ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfield's once told me to dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a pint of boiled water (and allow to cool), to clean eyes with, if you can't get hold of chloramphenicol. Obvs take this advice with a pinch of salt.

You can online from an online chemist

SiobhanSharpe · 31/01/2023 11:00

I've never had it on prescription! In fact my GP said just buy it at the chemist.
(prefer the drops as I find the ointment to be very sticky, but I'm not sure if the drops are available atm)

What area are you in ?

cagey31 · 31/01/2023 11:07

You will have more luck looking for ointment than drops. I hate using ointment but it's much easier to find. If you can't find any ointment, I can PM you where I buy mine online. It's a legitimate online UK pharmacy that has never failed to deliver for me.

Thank you im in the North west. I will try the boots site now.
I went on the golden eye website and every pharmacy they linked to was out of stock.
The ebay one will be Thursday/ Friday before it arrives which I guess is better than nothing
I will try the boots checker now and if all else fails salty water

Nearest in boots is 19.1 miles away grrr
Guess I'm going on a drive this afternoon.

I was going to suggest the boots website.

Glad you've located some.

My dog has dry eye, one of his eye drops has been out of stock for over 6 months. Clearly something is going on.
