So I looked in my call log and nothing there so I definitely didn't do it accidently. How stange, can this be explained?

They've probably misdialled the number.

aibutohavethisusername · 30/01/2023 18:27

Was it definitely the police and not a scam?

Notaboutthebass · 30/01/2023 18:29

They just said that they'd had a 999 call from me and was checking if I was alright!

999 calls haven’t appeared in my call log when I’ve called them on mobile. I do it a fair bit too.

Notaboutthebass · 30/01/2023 18:32

Ah okay, I wasn't even on my dialling keypad though! When I've dialled it in the past it's shown in my log.

Don't know if you mean from a mobile or landline but I do know that Android doesn't store 999 and if you think about it that's a bloody good idea.

larchforest · 30/01/2023 18:35

Look at it this way - they did call you, and one day a call like that will save someone's life.

Notaboutthebass · 30/01/2023 18:38

Oh yeah, I said thanks for checking anyway!
@EldersOfTheInternet what do you mean doesn't store 999?

Could you have accidentally pressed the buttons at the side? I was trying to turn the sound up on my phone while it was in my pocket but I had been repeatedly pressing the power button by mistake. That sets off an sos call. If you don't cancel it they will call you

SO224350 · 30/01/2023 18:47

• Or, you can enable iPhone to start Emergency SOS when you press the side button five times. Go to Settings > Emergency SOS, then turn on Call with 5 Presses.
After an emergency call ends, your iPhone alerts your emergency contacts with a text message, unless you choose to cancel. Your iPhone sends your current location (if available) and—for a period of time after you enter SOS mode—your emergency contacts receive updates when your location changes.

Mariposa26 · 30/01/2023 18:59

as a pp has said, you can call accidentally on an iPhone by pressing the button on the side - the phone then counts down before calling 999 if you don’t stop it in time. It happened to me when my phone was in my bag and I didn’t notice, and the police called me back too. It wasn’t in my call log as I didn’t dial the number.

Mariposa26 · 30/01/2023 19:01

(Forgot to add I know it definitely happened rather than being a scam as it’s happened a few times and I’ve stopped it in time)

EldersOfTheInternet · 30/01/2023 19:06

That it doesn't store 999 in your call log

About 10 years ago, dp and I were living in quite a notorious part of South London and 4 police officers came crashing into our flat at night time, scaring the shit out of both of us ( we’d been asleep). They were responding to a 999 call from a phone registered to our address and took some convincing that we were/I was ok and hadnt called them. It wasn’t downstairs either. Maybe it was something like that?

thebellagio · 30/01/2023 19:29

If you press the side button it calls 999. I did it once when trying to sleep - thought I was turning the volume on my audiobook. Didn’t answer the phone when it rang me back as thought an unknown number at 2am was a crank. 2hrs later the police knocked on my door to do a welfare check.

Notaboutthebass · 30/01/2023 19:37

Thanks everyone. Maybe I did press the side, but it's been sitting beside me the whole time and surely it would have lit up and I'd seen that I'd done it!

Yes good idea that it doesn't store it, for safety reasons.

This happened a friend recently and it was an old mobile she had bought as a gift a good few years previous and was still registered to her. Did they confirm you rang from the number you were talking on?

Notaboutthebass · 30/01/2023 19:41

Or maybe that's the aim for it not to light up!

@Sleepwhatsthazzz no, which is surprising and I should have asked!

I've just checked mine. It does store 999 calls I've got one in there from last week. However I didn't realise the iPhone side button dials 999

Notaboutthebass · 30/01/2023 19:53

I have a Samsung, it does log normal 999 calls too.
