I know I’ve already posted about this before because I’ve been worried about my cat. He went for a heart scan today. He’s got HCM, a hole in his heart :( they’ve started him on Atenolol and he needs to go back in two and a half weeks time to see how he’s getting on. Prognosis, vet is unsure. Some cats do well, others don’t so it’s just a waiting game. Gutted.

Has anyone else experience this with their cats? How old are they now?

Thanks

How old is he? My cat had HCM - we were warned when we adopted him from the rescue. He was 4 when we got him and he lived with us for 4 years before dying very suddenly this summer at age 8. He saw various vets for fighting-related wounds and no one ever suggested medication, so maybe not quite the same as yours. He lived a full life until then, though - went outside and fought the neighbour’s cat, caught mice, domineered over the household, cuddled on your chest with his paws around your neck…

I'm sorry OP. My Bengal was diagnosed with HCM at 3 yrs. Sadly she passed away at just over 4 years old. We found out when she had a blood clot on her spine that paralysed both legs so was probably very advanced. She went on medication and regained her mobility very quickly. At the time we were told 6 months would be optimistic but she lasted over a year. Fortunately when the second blood clot happened we were with her and the vet saw her 10 minutes after it happened. He told us that there wouldn't have been time for pain to set in before she was out to sleep.
