An unexpected £200 - what shall I spend it on?

I've just discovered that in 2006 the accountant for the company I worked for filed a tax return for me as there was an error in my maternity pay they wanted to correct - not exactly sure what happened as they just asked me to give permission. I was exahusted with DD at the time and never heard anything further then just forgot.

Today - finally I decided to dig about in my government gateway account and discovered they owed me £218.56! I've now put a claim in only 17 years late..

So what shall I do with it? The trouble is there's not much I NEED - and even not a huge amount I want but this time I want to do something nice for me. It won't impact family cash flow at all because effectively I didn't know I had it Grin

A robot hoover!

ClippClopp · 30/01/2023 15:57

Nothing. Keep it until that thing/event that your REALLY want but can't fully justify comes around rather than trying to think of things to spend it on.

[Boring answer, I know, sorry!]

Save it till you need something.

FatSealSmugSoup · 30/01/2023 16:01

Go fucking MENTAL and run a load through the tumble-dryer! 😂

I'd go on to Groupon or Wowcher and have a look for a bargain night in a fancy hotel fairly local (i.e. not a flight away!). One with dinner, bed and breakfast, and in an area with some nice walks or shops, museums etc so I could squeeze every possible minute out of the day!

You could arrive nice and early and either leave your overnight stuff in the car or with reception, head off out for a few hours, then get checked in. A lovely bath and a nap, followed by dinner and a couple of drinks. Leave as late as possible the next morning.

Enjoy the money, whatever you decide, it's a lovely chance for a wee treat.

Are you sure they'll actually pay it back after so long?
If they do, buy yourself some Lego! My recommendation to everyone who has money they don't know what to do with.

Tamarindtree · 30/01/2023 16:05

Botox

Riverlee · 30/01/2023 18:03

Spend a third and save the rest. Or if you’re really not sure, I can spend it for you..

Floofyduffypuddy · 30/01/2023 18:03

@FatSealSmugSoup

The fun we have these day's 🤣

TheChosenTwo · 30/01/2023 18:05

I’ve just booked myself a course of 6 massages for the next 6 months, this would have paid for a chunk of that! I’ve promised myself to spend money on actually taking time out this year, I used to go for regular massages and facials etc and just sort of stopped for no real reason other than feeling a bit guilty about the indulgence. Now I just think fuck it, we’ll all be dead one day, I’m going to spend the time guilt free being pampered for a bit. I’m totally worth it!!

listsandbudgets · 07/02/2023 22:10

Amazingly, it turned up in my bank account this morning.

I've decided to keep half to take my mum and sister out for a nice meal and drinks when we go away later this year, give £50 to the local food bank and keep the last £50 until I see something I'd particularly like to buy.

You are kind.

FatSealSmugSoup · 08/02/2023 07:22

That sounds lovely! I’d have probably done something really boring realistically like stick £75 each in the kid’s ISAs and £50 for me on something “lovely dahling”.

FatSealSmugSoup · 08/02/2023 07:24

Actually no I wouldn’t, because I’ve just remembered I’ve got a similar random sum coming and I’ve earmarked it towards a chicken coop.

Rock and fucking roll baby!
