How long did your cat live with a heart murmur for?

Cat going for scan tomorrow, I know I’ve posted about it before but I’m so nervous.

He has a grade 4/5 out of 6 murmur.

If your cat had a murmur what was the grade? How long did they live?

Thanks.

I don't think that the grace of the murmur is as relevant in cats as it is in dogs. So 🤞 for good news for you tomorrow

My dog has had a grade 4 for 3 years, he's as mad as normal. I don't know what the similarity is between cats and dogs but this just popped up in my active.

I was never given a grade when my boy was diagnosed with a heart murmur at 4 years old, although I was warned he could go at any time.
He lived until 18 years old bless him.

Very common in cats apparently. Ours has one but the vet didn't say he needs medication.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 29/01/2023 21:22

Our cat lived to 16. I have a heart murmur and got diagnosed 5 years after the cat. Dm said the fact the cat was fine reassured her about me so she was never overly worried (which is an interesting way to look at it!).

It wasn't the murmur which was the issue for my elderly puss, it was her kidneys failing. Never got a grade for the murmur as it was only diagnosed when she was well into end stage kidney failure - she lasted about another 9 months.

He lived to 18. Born with his heart murmur. Miss his furry little face.

KellyM1998 · 29/01/2023 21:34

Oh bless you. Do you know what grade murmur he was born with? Mine is only 9 months old and the high grade was worrying me. Scan tomorrow so I should know more. Just hope he will be ok.

My cat was diagnosed with a "small" heart murmur when he was neutered about 6 months. He seems perfectly healthy approaching his 6th birthday.

KellyM1998 · 29/01/2023 21:41

Has he been seen since then? So glad to hear he’s Ok!

He's an absolutely standard pita, for a cat. The biggest pita cat I have ever had. The only moggie to purr aggressively, knock things off the table and stare me straight in the eye. He specialises in killing birds (but not often) where his brother takes rodents. (We live on a farm, but they're pets). Yeah, he's fine. Snoring on my lap atm. I love him really.

He’s having his scan done now :( being discharged at 2pm. So nervous

How did it go?

KellyM1998 · 30/01/2023 15:12

Was supposed to pick him up at 2 but they hadn’t done the scan when I phoned, got to pick him up at 4:15, I’ll let you know then. Hoping for the best :(

My cat was diagnosed with a murmur when she was a kitten. She lived to be 19. I wasn't given a grade but she certainly lived life to the full and it didn't seem to affect her at all.

Walkinginthesand · 30/01/2023 15:35

Darling Molly was diagnosed with a grade 2 heart murmur when she was about 8 and her DD Sarah when she was about 14. Neither were affected by the condition and lived happy lives til they were 17 or 18. Miss them both ❤️💕

He’s got HCM, a hole in his heart :( they’ve started him on Atenolol and he needs to go back in two and a half weeks time to see how he’s getting on. Prognosis, vet is unsure. Some cats do well, others don’t so it’s just a waiting game. Gutted.

Mine is 16 and going strong!

My cat was diagnosed with a heart murmur at about 2yo, she had a heart scan where they found the cause then another a month later to track. She is 13 now, still has the heart murmur but is absolutely fine and healthy

KellyM1998 · 30/01/2023 17:32

What was the cause of his murmur? Mine has a hole in his heart :(

Was yours diagnosed with anything? Like HCM? Did yours have to have a heart scan?

Never given a grade but diagnosed at 2 and lived until 14. Died very quickly and painlessly of a heart attack while eating his dinner. Just there one second and then gone.

TY78910 · 18/01/2025 21:34

Hi OP. Trailing through threads as my cat has also been diagnosed with a murmur.

How is your kitty? I hope everything was ok in the end?
