Are ipads worth it?

Vodafone keep offering me a good deal on an ipad, and I'm very easily led and convinced....

I read a lot of books on my kindle, but it's very old and tired now and could probably do with replacing. I use the kindle app on my iphone but I don't find the screen big enough so it's quite hard. I also like the idea of being able to use recipe apps and websites on a bigger screen rather than squinting at my phone, and there's a few games I would play too. Are they really worth it or would I probably just be wasting money? Do they do anything amazing that means I absolutely cannot live without it? I can afford it, but I'm wondering whether I should or not

Yes

Pyewhacket · 27/01/2023 11:16

Absolutely, I wouldn't be without mine.

Peridot1 · 27/01/2023 11:18

I love mine and use it constantly. However I also have a Kindle and read on that rather than the iPad. The kindle is lighter and there is no glare from the screen reading in the sun.

I use my iPad for emails, reading newspapers, MN, Pinterest, magazines, some tv programmes. I couldn’t live without mine.

chipsandpeas · 27/01/2023 11:19

i love mine but much prefer reading on a kindle

sanityisamyth · 27/01/2023 11:21

100%. I wouldn't be without mine.

FlounderingFruitcake · 27/01/2023 11:22

Invaluable for kids when travelling! For that reason we have 2 at home but as an adult I have zero need for it. For reading an actual kindle is so much better.

Beamur · 27/01/2023 11:22

I love mine. It's basically a sized up version of the computing capacity of your phone. Bigger screen, easier to type, excellent for looking stuff up, playing music, storing photos, etc. Portable and convenient.

Ifailed · 27/01/2023 11:22

If you want a tablet, don't waste your money on an apple product, there are plenty of other makes out their running android.

ImmigrantAlice · 27/01/2023 11:22

Yes, they are great, but no, not for reading books on. A Kindle is far nicer for that.

Walkinginthesand · 27/01/2023 11:22

Yes. Mine is still going strong after nearly seven years and, when the time comes, will be replacing it with another iPad

LlynTegid · 27/01/2023 11:23

I use a tablet only when on holiday. Mainly to check when things are open, directions, sometimes news and sport.

I decided the extra was not worth it. Your use seems greater though, I think worth the extra for you.

Aposterhasnoname · 27/01/2023 11:24

Couldn’t live without mine, but I also gave a kindle that I take on holiday to read as I’d be worried about breaking/losing the iPad.

PattyBladell · 27/01/2023 11:24

Well this is all sounding very convincing, apart from reading being better on a kindle. I was hoping you would all say the ipad is better for that. Maybe I do just need a new kindle insteadHmm

@Ifailed Apple is my preference. All my other products are Apple and I want to be able to link the ID to it

I have the latest mini and pro (also easily led 🤣) and love them. I use the mini with the kindle app, and it's perfect for travel. I use the pro for watching TV and YouTube, for my business accounts, general browsing and of course Mumsnet. My phone is a Samsung and I've no plans to switch that to an iPhone, but I do love the tablets, so if you can afford it I'd say go for it.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 27/01/2023 11:35

Most definitely. I’d be lost without mine.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 27/01/2023 11:39

Yes if you are looking for a tablet, Especially if you have other apple products to link it too. I do still have a kindle paperwhite to actually read though as I dont enjoy reading on the iPad as much, so if purely looking for a reading device I would go kindle.

pippinsleftleg · 27/01/2023 11:40

You could get the mini which might be better for kindle but have the advantages of the iPad

don’t get the 10th gen as it’s really heavy and bulky (I just bought one to replace my 9th gen as b artery failing and I hate it so sending back)

KnottyKnitting · 27/01/2023 11:41

Absolutely love my I pad. But not that keen on reading on it and still use my kindle paper white for reading as it is much smaller and lighter.

Pashazade · 27/01/2023 11:42

Another iPad lover here, but again prefer reading on my paperwhite, it's just easier. But iPad is excellent for magazines!

BestIsWest · 27/01/2023 11:42

Yes but a Kindle is better for reading.

BarrelOfOtters · 27/01/2023 11:44

I use it for reading - but am thinking of getting a kindle as I'm too easily distracted on the IPAd. But I use mine all the time - I find most things easier on the Ipad than the phone if I'm in the house, recipes, reading the paper, looking stuff up, booking things.

SiobhanSharpe · 27/01/2023 11:46

I have an ipad with loads of books on it that are unread -- if i got a kindle would i be able to transfer them onto it?
BTW i love my ipad, have had them since 2013! Am on my third. But it's notngreat for reading books.

fancyfrogs · 27/01/2023 11:46

Echoing others - love my iPad but kindle much nicer for reading on. I have read a bit on my iPad but prefer the paper-like look and less glare from kindle screen.

FannythePinkFlamingo · 27/01/2023 11:48

I love my iPad - I use it all the time. But, as others have said, my Kindle is my preferred choice for reading.

PattyBladell · 27/01/2023 11:48

@SiobhanSharpe are they books you've purchased on Amazon? If so you can add your Amazon account to the kindle and it should connect. If I go on the kindle app on my phone it syncs up and takes me to the last page I read on the kindle
