Tell me about Uber !

I know nothing of how Ubers work as I have lived rurally for many years and they don't exist here !
My elderly father lives in an outer London borough and is giving up his car soon. His neighbours tell him that for short notice trips (shops etc) it is difficult to get taxis and they use Uber. How do they work and would it be simple enough for a mobile but relatively fragile and wobbly 84 yr old with limited tech skills and a slightly dodgy memory to manage ?

Can you set up an account with the local taxis firm and book in journeys in advance?
Eg Tues 10am Town pick up in 3 hours
Sun 9am church pick up in 90 mins
Etc etc.

Uber allows you to select uber assist and no cash needed- payment is taken from your card but a deal with a local firm may be better

You can set the app up for him so it’s linked to his card. Best thing would be to try it out for yourself from his house and see how you think he’d get on, if that’s an option.
