Rats entering toilet

We heard scratching and squeaking under our lino in the bathroom and actually saw movement. There's a loose floorboard which rats must have climbed up under the lino through.

Luckily we got an appointment the next day for a man to come out from the council who confirmed we have rats in our waste pipe. He couldn't find any evidence of them anywhere else in the house not even the loft but I am absolutely beside myself now. I won't use the toilet as he said they could come up it.

Has anyone used one of those one way flap things to fit to the waste pipe which prevent them from getting up inside the waste pipe? I don't even know what sort of person I would get to fit something like that. No one would want to do that job! I can't go on not using the toilet though.

My daughter runs a small business she is fairly successful but has to work hard at it.
Over the years she has had problems with friends and family requiring her services but either are unwilling to pay or take advantage by changing the terms and conditions that she has for paying customers.
Obviously when she is providing the service for friends or family either at a reduced cost or no cost at all then she is losing money.
Reluctantly she has decided to stop allowing friends and family to use her services, unless she has free time in her schedule and offers to them voluntarily.
My Dd has just made contact after a number of years with an old school friend. She was delighted to renew this friendship but within a few days of contact being re established the friend had contacted her to book her services professionally. The implication was it would be without charge, or at a very reduced rate.
The friend was appalled by my Dd’s policy and has made it clear she wants no further contact with my Dd.
I think that true friends will understand that this is my Dd’s livelihood and respect her decision. However my Dd is very worried that people won’t understand.
What is the general opinion?

Thank you for all your advice. We got the water company straight onto it and they've been amazing. The man came out an hour after we rang and has put poison in our shared manhole and also treated connecting households. Next week he's coming with a camera which can check for cracks in the drains and to see any activity.
They actually knocked my laundry basket over this morning when I was in the shower by either pushing the lino up or moving floorboards but I actually didn't scream (was in the shower). I think I can kind of make myself believe they won't enter the actual house.
I'm hoping pest control will look under floorboards in the bathroom on Monday as I think it would be easily visible as it makes itself (or themselves) known several times a day. Don't know what the hell its eating though.

I was once having a bath in my old flat and I could hear a strange noise coming from the toilet. I looked over and saw a hole /slit appearing on the waste pipe (one of those concertina plastic pipes)
As the hole got bigger I saw a flash of grey fur and realised it was a rat!!
I feel like the rat is following me as we have since moved house and both us and our next door neighbour have had the same issue . This time I didn't see anything as the toilet pipes are boxed in but we noticed the smell from the leak it caused.
I feel this is a good enough reason to try and persuade my husband we should get a cat!!!

Stuff of nightmares..

I once had a rat run between my legs in a squat toilet at a Romanian railway station.. it revcived a shower it probably never recovered from and I took about 2 hours and a good dose of very potent plum brandy to calm down and still shudder at the memory

Get the flap fitted OP.. Horrible things

Op you are braver than me, I nearly moved out when I discovered a rat trying to build a next under my decking.

I'm really not brave at all. I just don't have a choice but to get on with it. I use the bathroom very quickly for a shower in the morning then don't go in again. I use the other bathroom for the toilet, even then I throw a load of bleach down first and hover.

I wish my neighbours would take the situation seriously. We are always the only ones who pay for pest control.

I can go and stay at my mam's if it gets desperate.

That's horrific! Hope you're over it now. We do actually have a cat who has adopted us and lives half with us. She's allowed everywhere in the house but won't enter the bathroom for some reason. Maybe ratty is bigger than her! I know she's a killer because she often brings us presents.
