What's life like with an electrician husband?

DH is thinking of re training to be an electrician, will he be working away a lot? What's it like being a wife of an electrician, is it hard work? Long hours? Worth it? We have young kids and I work part time, will it even be doable?
Any advice or tips welcome!

Depends on who he works for and the type of electricals job he gets - domestic or working on sites etc.

My.hudband works for a local authority. He works 37 hrs a week in domestic properties with a standby week every 5 weeks providing out of hours cover.

He has worked a contractor working longer daytime hrs and weekends - travelling further domestic and some offices and factories.

The company I work for (utilities) employes electricians but its not domestic at all - my husband couldn't do it for example. They work rotating shifts, bank Holidays and do standby.

Previously husband has worked away doing shop fits- away Monday to Friday. He hated this. But good money.

So really depends.....

I mean I could be wrong but I don’t think being an electrician is any more taxing than any other job. I suspect it will depend on the hours he is meant to work (if employed) or the types of jobs he takes and how he arranges them (if self-employed).

Dh works in what is considered a ‘trade’ (not an electrician, but he has his own company and has about 6 employees too. He’s generally always worked 9-4/5/6 with some flexibility (will do the school run some days and then catch up on admin or billing in the evening). Certainly hasn’t stopped me working as I’ve always worked anywhere from 3 days a week when dc were tiny to FT. I travel for work still, in fact just got back from 2 nights away. He still comes to most parents evenings, all school plays, lots of sporting events, etc.

Shocking

Depends what area he works in. DH works in manufacturing, mending the machines. Long hours and lots of overtime but the money is very good as there's a shortage of people with his skills which means he can basically walk out of one job and into another.

Tingling

My husband is an electrician. He worked 0730 - 1600. It's hard work and quite stressful but I think that's more to do with the company he works for.
I think you're thinking it's going to be a big upheaval if he does become one but really it's just like a normal job.
The only thing that causes minor issues is he needs to take 2 weeks off over Christmas which means we don't have as many holidays to take together.

We just fuse together

@PrunellaDeVil 😂

Come on to say that that's one way to put a spark back into your relationship

How long is a piece of string????

Saying this as the wife of a tradesman who is self employed and many many years experience. Some days are long, some days are short, some jobs are an absolute ball ache and some are a piece of piss 🤷‍♂️

My dad was an electrician. The only complaint my mother had was, that he never did anything electrical at home.

This! I had no ceiling lights in my hall or kitchen for at least a year when we moved in here!

You mean my current one? There was a bit of resistance to his trans sister at first but now, ohm my god!

stitchinguru · 24/01/2023 21:57

You might have to switch things round a bit.
