How much tax with 2 jobs

userhjf67 · 24/01/2023 20:38

I currently have a job that pays me £938 a months and have been offered a second job that pays £861.50 a month, how much tax will I pay? Do I pay more with a second job?

Just trying to do all the calculations and check if it's worth it with the extra outgoings it will entail

You can split your tax code so that you pay equal amounts roughly. HMRC can advise

About £151.50 a month tax. That’s not including your national insurance which is extra and could be different if you are paying into a pension (hopefully lower, but it depends what number you have told us, pre or post pension).

You can earn £12,500 a year before you pay any tax, then anything over this is taxed at 20% until you are earning around £50,000 when the tax on anything above that is 40%

That’s total across both jobs by the way.

Your tax free allowance per month is £1047 so you'll have £109 to use in your second job. £860 minus £109 is £751. If you're in England it's £751 at 20% so £150 in tax.
However, that spare £109 has been 'banked' so you've £109 x 9 to use up before you pay any tax. Best thing to do is contact HMRC and ask for a code spilt so the £150 is paid over your two jobs.

You are taxed at the same rate whether you have a single job or two, the ni is lower if your income is split over 2 jobs
